Aggiungi al carrelloThis is the second of Atkinson's works to be published after his return from St. Petersburg. He accompanied his uncle James Walker there when the latter had been appointed engraver to the Empress Catherine and had returned in 1801 after 18 years spent in Russia. Dedicated to Alexander I, whose portrait is in frontispiece. 'These plates [.] show the spontaneity and spirit possible when the artist is his own engraver. [.] The colouring is skilfully done, in soft washes' (Abbey). Many subjects are here dealt with for the first, and often only, time in a European publication. The work is bound with volume one of Tableau gà nà rale de l'empire Othoman, a monumental work on the Ottoman court undertaken by Swedish diplomat, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson. Having a firm grasp of both Arabic and Turkish allowed d'Ohsson to witness aspects of everyday life at court that were normally inaccessible to Europeans. The plates present here depict the city's sites as well as religious and ceremonial ceremonies. First edition; 3 vols in one; frontispiece portrait, 100 colour plates, text in French and English, water stain effecting the latter plates, half dark green morocco, spine with gilt tooling and the title 'Russians and Turks', slightly worn; [bound with] Tableau gà nà rale de l'empire Othoman, Imprimerie de Monsieur, Paris, 1787, vol. The book on English costumes is the only one of the five that was probably not illustrated by Alexander, though the format is consistent with that of the other four. William Alexander (1767-1816) was the first keeper of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, who had gone out as junior draughtsman with Lord Macartney's embassy. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. Poet, Miser, Virtuoso, Hypochondriac An Exceptionally Rare Suite of Four Hand-Colored Aquatint Caricatures by John Augustus Atkinson ATKINSON, A. [John Augustus]. A Set of Four. Poet, Miser, Virtuoso, Hypochondriac. By Atkinson. London: Published by E. and C. M'Lean, 1824. Large folio (14 7/8 x 10 7/8 inches; 378 x 277 mm.). Four hand-colored aquatint plates. Each plate with the original Edward Orme imprint: "Pub. March 1, 1819, by Edwd. Orme, Bond St." The third plate watermarked "J. Whatman 1823." Original tan wrappers, front wrapper printed in black within a decorative border and "Price, Coloured, 12s". Wrapper extremities a little chipped and slightly soiled. Still an excellent copy of this exceptionally rare suite. Housed in a gray cloth clamshell case, spine with printed paper label. A most unusual and highly spirited set of four social caricatures by John Augustus Atkinson, depicting the Poet, Miser, Virtuoso, and Hypochondriac. Although issued here by E. and C. M'Lean in 1824, the plates themselves bear Edward Orme's March 1, 1819 imprint, suggesting an earlier appearance or intended issue. Abbey notes: "From the imprint it is evident that these plates appeared first in 1819, but whether in the same form or whether they were part of a larger book is not clear." John Augustus Atkinson (1775-1830), painter, etcher, and illustrator, was taken to Russia as a child by his uncle James Walker, engraver to Catherine the Great. Patronized by both Catherine and Emperor Paul, Atkinson returned to London in 1801 and became known for his finely observed costume and manners books, as well as for caricatural works such as Miseries of Human Life (1807). The present suite represents a rare example of his later satirical work. We have handled this title only once before, in the G.S. Tregear issue, which was in a somewhat larger format, measuring 18 1/2 x 11 9/16 inches. Abbey, Life, 257; Bobins III, 832; Prideaux, p. 326.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. (ATKINSON, John Augustus, illustrator) THORNTON, Alfred. Don Juan. London: Thomas Kelly, 1821-22. Two volumes. Octavo, early 20th-century full red levant morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. $1800.First edition of this satirical survey of life in early 19th-century England, wonderfully illustrated with 31 hand-colored aquatint plates by Atkinson, handsomely bound in full morocco-gilt by Root & Son."The first volume is a parody of Mozart's and Byron's Don Juan, the second an imitation of Egan's Life in London" (Abbey). Illustrator John Augustus Atkinson's work "had something of the lively and happy interest in human life of Thomas Rowlandson and the caricaturists of the periodÉ After his return to London he worked almost exclusively in aquatint and watercolor both of which suited his deceptively improvisatory manner. His occasional weaknesses in draughtsmanship were more than compensated for by the sharpness of his observations and the vitality and liveliness of his compositions" (ODNB). Abbey Life 323. Tooley 486. Upper corner of Volume I title page repaired. Text and plates generally clean, slight rubbing to joints, bindings sound and quite handsome. A lovely illustrated work in near-fine condition.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. "The Miseries of Human Life" Depicted in Sixteen Amusing Hand Colored Etched Plates [ATKINSON, John Augustus]. Sixteen Scenes taken from The Miseries of Human Life. By one of The Wretched. London: Published by Wm. Miller, 1807. First edition. Small oblong quarto (6 3/4 x 8 1/8 inches; 172 x 206 mm.). Hand-colored etched vignette title and sixteen hand-colored etched plates (one folding). At the top of each plate a reference is given to its place in James Beresford's Miseries of Human Life. Each plate accompanied by a leaf of descriptive text. Plates watermarked 1802, text watermarked 1806. Three plates with professionally repaired tears (see below), another with marginal foxing. One leaf of text with small (one inch) lower blank marginal tear. Some minor mainly marginal foxing or soiling. Modern full red morocco, covers ruled and decorated in gilt, front cover titles in gilt, spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers. Old booksellers description on front paste-down. An excellent uncut copy. "[Atkinson's] Sixteen Scenes taken from the miseries of Human Life, by one of the Wretched.was published by W. Miller in 1807, and is illustrated by etchings, mostly in soft-ground, coloured by hand. His spirited and clever drawings are full of character, surpassing those of Alken. No. II, 'Seeing the boy who is next above you flogged for a repetition which you know you cannot say,' should appeal to most Britons. The angry schoolmaster, laying on the birch with will, the pathetic countenance of the horsed victim, and the anguished stare of the miserable onlooker, waiting his turn with the book in hand, are all most happily and naturally expressed. Another excellent drawing, well worthy of Rowlandson, is No. IX.-'Miseries of Watering-Places.' A noteworthy point about the book is that the title and the idea of the illustrations seem to have inspired Rowlandson, whose Miseries of Human Life appeared, a year later, in 1808" (Martin Hardie). The Plates: 1. Miseries of the Country. 2. Miseries of Games, Sports, &c. 3. Miseries of London. (text leaf with 1 inch tear at lower blank margin) 4. Miseries of Stage Coaches. 5. Miseries of Social Life 6. Miseries of Reading and Writing. 7. Miseries Domestic. 8. Miseries Miscellaneous. 9. Miseries of Watering Places. 10. Miseries of Fashionable Life. (blank margins a little spotted) 11. Miseries of Fashionable Life. 12. Miseries of London - The Theatres. 13. Miseries of Travelling. 14. Miseries of the Table. (folding - professionally repaired tear and strengthened at fold) 15. Miseries Domestic. 16. Miseries Miscellaneous. (text plate neatly repaired at inner blank margin) Abbey, Life, 259. Aggiungi al carrelloOnly edition of this fine suite of plates, particularly rare in the original wrappers, as here. Just three other sets have gone through auction, all uncoloured: Christie's in 2002, Sotheby's in 1937, and the Boston auctioneers C. F. Libbie in 1905. WorldCat locates three copies only: Stanford, Chicago and Brown. No copy is held at the British Library, although there is one at the National Army Museum. The 16 scenes include piper George Clarke of the 71st Highlanders, who, although wounded, continued to play while the regiment went forward at Vimeiro; Captain Kelly of the Life Guards engaging a French colonel of cuirassiers at Waterloo; Sir Thomas Picton leading the storming party at Badajoz; (perhaps inevitably) the death of Sir John Moore at Corunna; and Captain Latham of the Buffs saving the King's Colour at Albuera. Three show Wellington: being mobbed by the enthusiastic inhabitants of Toulouse in 1814, huddling at a camp fire ("Bivouac in the Pyrenees") and, most strikingly, at Waterloo, giving his famous command "Stand Up, Guards!" Lithography was a relatively new medium in 1817 and the wrappers carry a puff by the publisher, Rudolph Ackermann, remarking on this: "a process possessing all the softness and beauty of the originals". It is a medium that certainly captures Atkinson's "deceptively improvisatory manner" (ODNB) of drawing. Atkinson (1774-1830) was largely self-taught and had made something of a name for himself with a series of attractive colour plate books that demonstrated his "lively draughtsmanship" (ODNB). In June 1815 he travelled to Belgium to view the battlefield of Waterloo, and his large depiction of the battle was exhibited at the British Institution in 1817 and engraved byJohn Burnettwo years later. "His work was popular, and among his patrons were theDuke of WellingtonandRichard Colt Hoare. Atkinson'swork had something of the lively and happy interest in human life ofThomas Rowlandsonand the caricaturists of the period" (ibid.) and this is certainly evident in the present suite of plates. Provenance: from the celebrated colour plate library of Norman Bobins, with his bookplate. Bobins 344 (this copy); Ogilby 13 ("this set was intended to be published in 6 parts, each of 4 plates. Only 4 parts were published"); not in Abbey. 4 parts (all published), landscape folio. With 16 hand-coloured lithograph plates. Uncut in original printed wrappers, stitching renewed, Ackermann's advertisements to back wrappers and verso of front wrappers. Housed in a custom solander box. Some fraying and repairs to edges, spines worn, front wrapper of first part lightly toned, general signs of handling and a few marks to wrappers, scattered foxing and browning, yet this remains a very good set. …
