Korps a…n der russischen Front und später der österreichisch-ungarischer Verbände in Ostsiebenbürgen und im Juli 1918 Kommandant der nach ihm benannten Heeresgruppe in Tirol und Feldmarschall. Seit 26. Oktober 1918 "Homo regius" in Ungarn, war er im August des folgenden Jahres Reichsverweser und wurde als solcher von Miklós Horthy abgelöst. Kulturell interessiert und begabt, wurde er von den Universitäten Budapest und Kolozsvar mit Ehrendoktoraten bedacht und amtierte von 1936 bis 44 als Präsident der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.

Da solche Höhen ohne druckfeste Kabinen für den menschlichen Organismus tödlich wären, brachte Piccard statt einer Gondel eine Aliminiumkugel an den Ballon an. ?Piccard war der erste Erfinder, Konstrukteur und Pilot eines Ballons mit Überdruckkabine, des FNRS, mit dem er zus. mit P. Piccard attracted world attention when, on 27 May 1931, ascending with Paul Kipfer in a free balloon (made in Augsburg, August Riedinger Ballon-Fabrik) he achieved a new altitude record of 51.775 feet. The sixteen-hour flight, which ended on an Austrian glacier, marked the first use of a pressurized cabin for manned flight?
