The editor was an active figure in the Zionist movement. Her husband was Zalman Shazar, the third President of the State of Israel. Born Rachel Katznelson into a traditional Jewish family. She graduated from Russian high school with honors at the age of 18. This gave her the possibility of going to university, which was only open to a small percentage of the Jewish community. She was accepted to the St. Petersburg University to study literature and history. She also studied at the Academy for Jewish Studies in St. Petersburg, where she met her future husband, Zalman Shazar, then known as Shneur Zalman Rubashov , whom she married in 1920. She immigrated Eretz Israel, then part of the Ottoman Empire, now Israel, in 1912 and was immediately active in a number of Zionist organizations, having previously joined the Labor Zionist movement in 1905 in her home town. In 1916, she was elected to the first Cultural Committee of the Labor Movement, alongside Berl Katznelson and Yitzhak Tabenkin (both also originally from Babruysk), and worked with them to enhance the education of workers. She was later elected as a member of the cultural committee of the Achdut Ha'avodah party and, in 1924, of the Histadrut. Throughout her life, she was actively involved with the Histadrut and the Mapai party, and performed many public duties. She also assisted her husband in his various public functions as a member of the Knesset, a government minister, a member of the Jewish Agency executive, and ultimately as President of Israel from 1963 to 1973.

(Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 6094) First edition. Schach-Echo was found in 1932 as an organ for Catholic Chess associations by Otto Katzer, who edited and published the monthly journal. The journal contained reports on upcoming tournaments, opening theoretical contributions and a section for chess composition. When Otto Katzer died in 1976, his son Gerhard assumed the management of the magazine until 1981. Charles Raes and Siegbert Rieger took over editor-ship and continued until 1992, when Carl Ed became editor. Mappa
Average. Backed on archival tissue for stability. Large area of infill at top center. Old poorly executed repairs and been replaced with archival repairs, but some damage is impossible to undo. Exhibits soiling throughout. Size 48 x 31.5 Inches. Published near the end of the American Vietnam War, this 1975 Vietnamese Ministry of Education wall map of Vietnam depicts the 1945 August Revolution, an armed revolt against the Japanese occupation and French colonial rule. Small illustrations of the Vietnamese Communist flag (now the national flag of Vietnam) mark cities where insurrections occurred, with dates in red. The dark red in extreme northern Vietnam highlights the region controlled by the Central Committee of the Communist Party, while the orange areas mark 'Chi?n Khu' (war zones). The August Revolution The August Revolution, also known as the August General Uprising, began in mid-August 1945, and within two weeks the Vi?t Minh controlled all of Vietnam. This fortuitous position evolved after the Japanese coup d'état in March 1945 that overthrew the puppet French government. The coup exacerbated an already devastating famine, which allowed the Vi?t Minh the opportunity to organize their 'People's Revolutionary Committees'. When the Japanese surrendered in August 1945, these committees were poised to seize power and did so without hesitation. Two weeks later, on September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnamese independence from France, which would lead to the French Indochina War (1946 -1954) and subsequently the American Vietnam War (1855 - 1975). Publication History and Census This map was created and printed by the Second Publishing House of Survey of Geodesy and Map and published by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education in 1975. This is the only known example.
