Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. 1st Edition. Austin, William H. The relevance of natural science to theology. First edition. London: The Macmillan Press Ltd., 1976. Library of Philosophy and Religion. Hardback, VG, in FAIR, unclipped dustjacket, sunned to spine, with shelfwear and rubbing to edges and a few small nicks neatly repaired from the inside with brown paper tape. Blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding strong. Very light tanning to endpapers. Small ownership signature to ffep. ix, 132pp., contents clean and bright. "This book is an attempt to show that the common belief that natural science is in principle irrelevant to theological doctrines is ill-founded, and to explore some of the ways in which science might bear on theology. The main arguments for the irrelevance thesis are examined in some detail, and in each case found either to be unsound or to support only a restricted version of the thesis. A distinction is drawn between direct relevance of scientific theories and scientifically-established facts to theological doctrinesi. e. the former either contradict or lend evidential support to the latterand various forms of indirect relevance. It is then suggested that arguments for the irrelevance thesis are of two main types. One type is based on an instrumentalist interpretation either of scientific theories (as in Pierre Duhem) or of religious beliefs (as in R. B. Braithwaite). In neither case, it is argued here, is an instrumentalist interpretation satisfactory; and in both cases, even if an instrumentalist interpretation is adopted, science can bear on theology in important indirect ways. The other main way of arguing for the irrelevance of science to theology depends on specifying distinct and mutually exclusive realms with which they are respectively concerned. But ways of doing this which are sufficiently sophisticated to be plausible prove difficult to formulate coherently. In this connection the approach of existentialist theologians, exemplified by Karl Heim, is studied, as in the contrast (drawn also by some 'linguistic' philosophers) between the objectivity of science and the personal commitment required by religious beliefs. By way of summary and application, a brief study of the doctrine of divine providence is then made, in which it is argued that contemporary theologians' difficulties with this doctrine result in large part from their efforts so to define theology as to exclude any possible bearing upon it of natural science" (from the cover).
