Consequently, besides rewriting much of the original text, it has been necessary to add an almost equal amount of completely new material: this covers second quantization and diagrammatic perturbation theory, symmetric and unitary group methods, new forms of valence bond theory, dynamic properties and response, propagator and equation-of-motion techniques and the theory of intermolecular forces.Problems (with hints on solutions) appear at the end of each chapter and form a valuable supplement to the text. Like the first edition, this is a teaching book which follows a deductive step-by-step path from basic principles up to the current frontiers of research. Although aimed primarily at graduate students and their teachers, it should be standard reference for all who come in contact with modern theories of the electronic structure and properties of molecules.The last twenty years have seen remarkable advances in molecular quantum mechanics. The traditional methods expounded in the first successful edition of this book have been implemented on a grand scale. In the Second Edition, Mcweeny has completly revised the text and has added a wealth of new material and example problems. A hardback book in good condition with clean pages inside. Quantum theory was developed in th…e early decades of this century and was first applied to problems in chemistry and molecular physics as early as 1927. It soon emerged however, that it was impossible to con sider any but the simplest systems in any quantita tive detail because of the complexity of Schrodinger's equation which is the basic equation for chemical and molecular physics applications. This remained the si tuation until the development, after 1950, of elec tronic digital computers. It then became possible to attempt approximate solutions of Schrodinger's equa tion for fairly complicated systems, to yield results which were sufficiently accurate to make comparison with experiment meaningful. Starting in the early nineteen sixties in the United States at a few centres with access to good computers an enormous amount of work went into the development and implementation of schemes for approximate solu tions of Schrodinger's equation, particularly the de velopment of the Hartree-Fock self-consistent-field scheme. But it was soon found that the integrals needed for application of the methods to molecular problems are far from trivial to evaluate and cannot be easily approximated.
