Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavane for a Dead Infanta) is a 1899 piece written for solo piano by French composer Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937); orchestral version appears in 1910. A nostalgic work, described by Ravel as "an evocation of a pavane that a little princess [infanta] might, in former times, have danced at the Spanish court" --- the pavane was a slow processional dance with form and style, much favoured by European courts of the 16th & 17th centuries.
