Aggiungi al carrello8vo, pp. vii, [1 (blank)], 165, [1 (blank)], [2 (index, blank)], with half-title, large folding map at end; offset to half of half-title, variable foxing throughout (heavier to first and final leaves); a good copy with the original printed wrappers laid down, printed in orange, black, yellow, blue, and green; some staining, a fe…w short closed tears to lower cover.Scarce first edition thus of Baldelli's sixteenth-century translation of this guide to Jerusalem for pilgrims by the Dutch cartographer Christian van Adrichem, instrumental in popularising the Stations of the Cross and the basis for maps of the Holy Land well into the eighteenth century. The Catholic priest Adrichem (15331585) was expelled from his native Delft in the wake of the Reformation and died in Cologne, where his biblical atlas Theatrum terrae sanctae et biblicarum historiarum was printed in 1590. Although he had never visited Jersualem, the work includes a detailed plan of the city and its surroundings in the time of Christ, including over 250 numbered locations of biblical significance described at length in the text. Pictured are, inter alia, the palaces of David, Solomon, Herod, and Agrippa, and the Temple (also depicting a High Priest), as well as Golgotha and the Via Dolorosa. Adrichem encourages readers to follow the Way of the Cross without leaving home, making an interior pilgrimage of sorts 'within the temple or the chamber of the imagination' (p. 67, trans.). The present edition reissues Baldelli's Italian translation of 1594 (Vero ritratto della città di Gierusalemme), which in the foreword is described as having fallen into obscurity, being unknown to Mazzuchelli. The publication of this edition was prompted by the discovery of a copy of Baldelli's translation at a convent in Florence, and adds a work on the death of the Virgin by Luigi Grassi, author of an 1872 history of bishops and archbishops of Genoa. OCLC finds three copies in the US (Harvard, Illinois, Yale), and none in the UK. Not in Library Hub. Language: Italian.

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Good. 8vo (177x112 mm). 272 pp. Collation: A-R8. Woodcut printer's device on the title page featuring the Medici's arms. Early 19th-century half vellum, lettering piece on spine. Ownership entries on the title page, one inked out, one by a certain Nicolaus de Buldellis. Some occasional light staining, but a very good… copy printed on thick paper.First edition, dedicated by the translator Francesco Baldelli to Giovanni Battista Ricasoli, Bishop of Cortona, of the first Italian translation of the chronicle by Robertus Monacus (or Robertus Remensis or Robertus de Sancto Remigio), a French Benedictine monk and historian, abbot of Saint Remy in Reims and then prior of Saint Oricle in Senus. A few years after the conclusion of the First Crusade, Robertus was commissioned to supplement the so-called Gesta Francorum. He wrote the Historia Hierosolymitana around 1106/07 also with the intention of supporting the efforts of the French royal house to launch a new crusade to the Holy Land. The Historia Hierosolymitana was first published in Cologne in 1472.The work, translated into vernacular Italian by Francesco Baldelli, a native of Cortona, known as a translator of the classics and for his collaboration on Giolito's ?Collana Istorica', is divided into eight books and deals with the war between the Christian princes and the Turks for the conquest of the Holy Land during First Crusade (1096-1099) (cf. C. Sweetenham, ed., Robert the Monk's History of the First Crusade, Ashgate, pp. 1-71).This work is commonly considered as one of the possible sources of inspiration for Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered.Although some bibliographies, including Adams (R-163) and Edit 16 (CNCE55525), mention an identical edition attributed to the Giunti's heirs, there is no doubt that this is a unique edition printed by Torrentino, as indicated by the type and his device on the title page (cf. W.A. Pettas, The Giunti of Florence, New Castle DE, 2013, p. 428)Edit 16, CNCE46838; USTC, 852742; Moreni, p. 203. Book.

This work is a biography of Greek Neo-Pythagorean philosopher Apollonius of Tyana (circa 3 BC - 97 AD according to this author). It was originally com…missioned by Julia Domna (died 217), the second wife of Roman emperor Septimius Severus and thought to have been a means of promoting pagan beliefs during a time of rising Christian influence (Britannica). The 16th century saw many classics works translated into the vernacular from Latin and Greek. Francesco Baldelli also translated all of Caesar's histories as well as works by Polidoro Virgili and Flavius Josephus, into Italian. Rare work. References: STC British Museum Italian 512.
