The text is mainly taken up with a key describing the 67 points numbered on the folding plate with information on each point of interest. This panoram…a of Athens was first exhibited by Barker and Burford in London in 1818 and 1822, and first made its appearance in America in New York at the Rotunda of John Vanderlyn in 1825, where it remained on view for more than a year. It was exhibited again at the Panorama in Boston in 1837 and again in 1842. There is an edition printed in Boston by W. W. Clapp, 1837, held by AAS, not listed in American Imprints, the present edition is not listed either. OCLC records an edition of this work described as possibly of American origin, listing its price as 6 ¼ cents, listing its date of publication as "1830?". The present edition, priced at 12 ¼ cents, does not appear in either American Imprints, or OCLC. See Oettermann, Stephan, The Panorama History of a Mass Medium, (1997), pp., 113-114, p. 315.

Aggiungi al carrelloLondon, 27 July 1808. Uncommon. Henry Aston Barker (17741856), landscape and panorama painter and exhibitor. He frequently travelled in the course of his work, and in August 1799 left England for Turkey, to make drawings for a panorama of Constantinople. At Palermo, he called on Sir William Hamilton, the English ambassador to th…e court of Naples, who introduced him to Lord Nelson, who, he wrote, "took me by the hand and said he was indebted to me for keeping up the fame of his victory in the Battle of the Nile for a year longer than it would have lasted in the public estimation" (Barker's memoranda). The panorama of Constantinople was exhibited in 1802, and the drawings were engraved and published in four plates. In 1801, Barker went to Copenhagen to make drawings for a picture of the battle, and while there he was again received by Nelson. In May 1802, during the Peace of Amiens, he went to Paris and made drawings for a panorama of the city. After this many other panoramas were exhibited, including the Coronation Procession of King George IV.

Rare polar-themed ephemera relating to Barker's panorama in Leicester Square. This was a popular attraction…, visited even by John Keats who was left tongue-tied. He wrote to his brother the month of its opening, "I have been very much pleased with the Panorama of the ships at the North Pole with the icebergs, the Mountains, the Bears, the Walrus the seals the Penguins and a large whale floating back above the water it is impossible to describe the place" (Letters 1814-1821, p. 95). The illustration in question was a double-decker panorama which was the first floor. On the second floor was the view of Petersburg depicted in the accompanying print. These plate illustrations could be purchased separately from the guide. There was another issue of the guide in 1820.
