Illustrations à l'eau-forte par Gabriel Barlangue (1 portrait frontispice, 4 hors texte et 15 dans le texte). Complet des 3 états des gravures. 1° l'eau-forte pure. 2° l'état terminé avec remarques. 3° l'état terminé avec la lettre pour les gravures dans le texte et avant la lettre pour les hors-texte. Admirable texte que Huysmans rédigea en 1877 racontant le destin d'Eugène Lejantel qui, de jeune étudiant en droit, habitué des fêtes du Quartier latin, est enrôlé dans la guerre contre la Prusse. La maladie lui épargne les combats mais pas l'ennui, auquel il survit grâce à la compagnie de son ami Francis.
