Ed un atlante in-f°grande oblungo (cm. 45 x 59), di complessive 92 tavole in rame (precedute da un frontespizio generale), le tavv. 87-92 sono costituite da carte geologiche impresse su foglio doppio. Cartonatura editoriale stampata al piatto anteriore. Il vol. di testo in perfette condizioni, mentre l'Atlante ha una gora d'umidità nella parte inferiore destra delle tavole, qualche traccia d'uso e di polvere, e alcuni rinforzi o riparazioni ai margini della copertina editoriale. (12484) Opera rara e difficile da reperire completa, data la differenza dei formati tra il volume di testo in-4° e l'atlante in-f° massimo. Essa costituisce un quadro fondamentale del livello su cui si era attestata la produzione del ferro e dell'acciaio in Europa verso la metà del XIX secolo, nel momento in cui si stava affermando (con l'Inghilterra all'avanguardia) il passaggio alla grande industria, dopo i progressi già avvenuti alla fine del XVIII secolo. Il tutto sulla base della priorità del "metodo diretto" (altiforni) su quello indiretto, e con l'utilizzo massiccio del carbon fossile e del coke, e soprattutto della macchina a vapore che liberava le fabbriche dalla servitù della immediata prossimità ai corsi d'acqua. Il balzo tecnologico decisivo avvenne poi negli Stati Uniti, a Cincinnati, nel 1854, soprattutto coll'impiego del metodo Bessemer.Una prima edizione del trattato era apparsa a Parigi nel 1842-46 (cfr. INIZIOCORSIVO]Brunet, II/1276); questa è l'edizione definitiva. La materia è suddivisa in 5 sezioni: la I sezione comprende le nozioni preliminari, inclusa la parte storica (di notevole interesse) sulla fabbricazione del ferro e dell'acciaio; la II sezione è dedicata alle materie prime utilizzate nei processi produttivi; la III riguarda propriamente alla "fabrication de la fonte"; la IV è dedicata alla fabbricazione del ferro, all'organizzazione del lavoro e all'assetto delle officine, all'impiego dei motori idraulici ed a vapore, e alla trasmissione del movimento; la V Sezione infine analizza la situazione statistica e commerciale dell'industria siderurgica in Europa: materie prime, legislazione commerciale, situazione della Francia, del Belgio, dell'Inghilterra e della Germania, proposte migliorative del regime protezionistico e di tutto il sistema degli scambi commerciali. Al termine del volume VI è la Description des Planches. I 3 autori, ingegneri di fama, furono tipici esponenti di quel ceto tecnico e imprenditoriale che si affermò nel II Impero attraverso la realizzazione delle grandi opere pubbliche: ingegneria ferroviaria e idraulica (sostenute tra l'altro da Pereire e dal movimento Sansimoniano), sviluppo delle costruzioni in carpenteria metallica. L'industria siderurgica ebbe un ruolo propulsivo nello sviluppo del sistema ferroviario di quegli anni, e non a caso Eugène Flachat (1802-73) fu uno dei grandi costruttori delle prime ferrovie francesi come la Paris-St.-Germain, e la Paris-Versailles), e costruì la Gare Saint-Lazaire. Alexis Barrault (1812-65) progettò il "Palais de l'Industrie" sulla Senna; Jules Petiet (1813-71) fu anch'egli membro attivo della "Société des Ingenieurs" sorta in quegli anni per impulso di Flachat. L'Atlante illustra con grande ricchezza di dettagli gli impianti e i macchinari allora utilizzati, e contiene alla fine (tavv. 87-92) le carte geologicche e mineralogiche delle regioni minerarie della Francia, del Belgio, dell'Olanda e della Germania Renana.
