These alterations ranged from simple misprints to deliberate changes made with the aim of correcting the text in the printer's opinion. Such practices were commonplace in the printing industry of the era, not limited to dramatic works but also found in dictionaries, religious texts, and other forms of literature. The study traces the origins of these alterations to the way books were commonly produced in England during the reigns of Elizabeth and James I. As a result of the haphazard production methods of the time, authors often had little to no control over the final printed versions of their works. The author draws on extensive evidence from first editions and reprints to illustrate the nature and number of these alterations, arguing that they can be grouped into five categories: ordinary misprints, line-shiftings, omissions, text-changes, and small additions. The author's research sheds new light on the vexed question of textual authority in early modern English literature, challenging the long-held assumption that discrepancies between first editions and later versions were primarily due to the use of stage copies as printer's copy. The insights provided in this book will be of interest to scholars, students, and general readers interested in the history of the book, the transmission of texts, and the complexities of textual editing.
