Hardcover. Quarto. Hardcover. Brown paper boards in illustrated jacket. 271 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 29 cm. This dazzling survey of 16th-century Venetian painting captures the striking colors and revolutionary characteristics of one of art history's greatest chapters. It is hard to imagine more profoundly influential artists than the Venetian painters of the 16th century. Whether creating sweeping devotional altarpieces or intimate portraits, the Venetian painters changed the way artists employed color and composition. These defining qualities are on brilliant display in this book that covers fascinating aspects of the work of Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, Lorenzo Lotto, Jacopo Bassano, and many others. More than one hundred paintings, drawings, and prints are reproduced in stunning detail. Side-by-side comparisons draw readers into the conversations between Venetian artists as they tackled similar subjects and vied for commissions. The book opens with fascinating essays about the history of 16th-century Venice, the Venetian School of painting, and the techniques of the Venetian masters. As beautiful as it is informative, this book features all of the excitement and splendor of one of the most prolific and important chapters in the history of European art. Exhibition: Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, Germany (13.02. - 26.05.2019). "Venetian painting of the Renaissance counts among the most consequential chapters of all European art history. The early sixteenth century saw several artists, first and foremost among them the young Titian, develop a distinctive brand of Renaissance art that rested on genuinely painterly effects and the interaction of light and colour. The innovations of these painters--alongside Titian, Sebastiano del Piombo, Lorenzo Lotto and others--soon spread, making waves far beyond the Serenissima itself. The emergence of Jacopo Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Bassano in the 1540s signalled the arrival of a talented new generation of young artists who would vie with their elders for patronage. This book presents selected aspects of these cinquecento paintings that can be regarded as quintessentially Venetian--among them the atmospherically charged landscapes that mark the inception of landscape painting as a genre in its own right, the idealised portraits of beautiful women known as 'belle donne' and the predilection for a radiant palette. The book leaves readers with a vivid impression of the extraordinary artistic and thematic breadth of the Renaissance as it unfolded in Venice, leaving us in no doubt as to why so many radically different artists of later centuries would repeatedly look here for inspiration." About the book >.>.> Titian and the Renaissance in Venice by Bastian Eclercy provides a detailed examination of the illustrious Venetian painter Titian and his impact on the Renaissance art movement. The book explores how Titian, emerging in the 1540s, symbolised a new generation of artists who not only drew from the rich tradition of their predecessors but also challenged and expanded the artistic boundaries of their time. Eclercy highlights Titian's innovative techniques and the ways in which his works contributed to the evolution of Venetian painting. The text delves into Titian's artistic relationships, particularly with younger artists and established masters, illustrating how the interplay between generations fostered a vibrant creative environment in Venice. Eclercy draws on specific artworks and historical contexts to paint a picture of Titian's influence, explaining how his style and approach diverged from earlier practices while simultaneously retaining elements of classical beauty. The interactions between Titian and his contemporaries, like Tintoretto and Bassano, further illuminate the dynamic and transformative nature of the Venetian Renaissance. This scholarly work not only describes Titian's life and career but also contextualises his contribution within the broader tapestry of Renaissance art. Eclercy invites readers to engage with the complexities of Titian?s legacy, proposing a deeper understanding of how art evolved during one of its most compelling eras in Venice. The narrative aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Titian's significance, making it essential reading for those interested in art history and the Renaissance.

An exhibition organized by the Stadel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, and the Gemaldegalerie, Staatliche Museen, Berlin.; The paintings created in the Burgundian Netherlands of the early fifteenth century are characterized by the precise, realistic details and extraordinary power of expression that marked the birth of early modern painting north of the Alps. In addition to the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, the "Master of Flemalle," who has often been identified with the painter Robert Campin of Tournai (ca. 1375-1444/45), and Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400-1464), who worked in Campin's workshop between 1427 and 1432 before moving to Brussels to assume the position of city painter, played crucial roles in this development. Nevertheless, the identification of the Master of Flemalle with the painter Robert Campin is still fiercely debated, as are the boundaries between his work and that of his temporary assistant Rogier van der Weyden. The exhibition at the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt am Main and the Gemaldegalerie in Berlin is the first major presentation of the work of both artists. Many of the nearly sixty paintings in the exhibition, which come from major collections in Europe and the United States, have never been loaned before, while some groups of works have been reunited for the first time in centuries, thus making the exhibition a unique opportunity to compare the individual paintings and to discuss the questions surrounding their origins in a fresh new way.
