Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. [Travel] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (18 x 12cm), pp.142; [2], advertisements for Shell and Gered. Illustrated softcovers designed by Edward Bawden with printed price of 2/6 to front cover. Black and white in-text illustrations throughout, including an illustrated title-page. Toning throughout including to covers, previous seller's writing in pencil to last page, 1cm tear to base of spine to front cover, some light soiling to back cover. Very good. This charming A-Z of London is filled with a time-capsule like quality, and was published in the same year Queen Elizabeth II was coronated. Zebra crossings are regarded with suspicion as 'relative newcomers to London' and Metcalf warns that they may only work in 'theory' and to be wary not 'to leave London with less feet than you started with'. Also observed are the 'BARROW BOYS' and the 'BOWLER HAT' and 'the possession of the correct type of bowler [.] is as essential to the young man about town as a pair of trousers'. Alongside these witty observations, the visitor to London is provided with practical advice about places to visit ranging from 'West-End restaurants with dancing' to the three major Chemists. Alongside the entries, are in-text illustrations by Edward Bawden whose work often revolves around the themes of leisure, nature and architecture; Bawden was a member of the Great Bardfield Artists, and his recognisable style permeates this pleasant little guide.
