Béla Köpeczi (1921 - 2010) was a Hungarian cultural historian and politician, who served as Minister of Education between 1982 and 1988. He was the Secretary-General of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 1972 to 1975.… Expanding the traditional framework of historical science, he examined the interactions of ideology, culture and literature with an interdisciplinary approach, the historical development of this particular system of relations from modern times to the present day. He dealt extensively with 17th-20th centuries, with their literary currents and spiritual determination in the 19th century, with Janzenism, Cartesianism, French Enlightenment, Romanticism (especially Petofi), existentialism in 20th century literature, socialist realism, and the aesthetic interpretation of the Cultural Revolution. His studies of romanticism, his studies of the ideological background of French, Italian and Romanian literature, and the image of Hungarians reflected in the literature of individual peoples were of special importance. In recognition of his scholarly work, he was awarded the Academic Prize in 1966, He was awarded the State Prize in 1980 for his research in the international context of the struggles for independence in Hungary and in the organization of social science research, and in 2003 the Middle Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary was awarded the star. The French Academy awarded him the Order of Palms in 1972, and in 1987 he was awarded the French Academy Gold Medal. The New Hungarian Quarterly was an English language journal published in Hungary and edited with the interests of an English speaking audience in mind. Research into relations between Hungarian and universal history is one of the important tasks facing Hungarian historians. A full understanding of the past and present situation is impossible without a knowledge of the immediate and broader surroundings, both new and old. In recent years Hungarian historians have made efforts to draw up the history of Central and Eastern Europe, of other European regions, and even other continents considered both on their own and from the aspect of Hungary's relations with them. This turning outwards represents both an enrichment of knowledge and a change in approach. The desire to apprehend scientifically the broader historic environment and the necessity of shaping public opinion were the motives behind the working team of historians which undertook to write the history of Transylvania from the earliest times to our day. The New Hungarian Quarterly was published between 1960 and 2014, after the death of Iván Boldizsár (1988) Miklós Vajda became the editor-in-chief until 2005, and after his retirement until the end of the paper, Zsófia Zachár. Aus Geständnissen, Tagebuchblättern Reisenotizen, Briefen, Streitschriften und Zeitungsartikeln entsteht vor uns plastisch der Lebensweg des bedeutendsten und weltweit bekanntesten ungarischen Dichters des 19. Jahrhunderts: wir sehen. wie sich seine Persönlichkeit formt und seine Ideen klären. Er legt einen Weg zurück, der von der anarchistischen Empörung bis zur republikanischen Überzeugung, vom Eintritt für nationale Unabhängigkeit bis zu der Forderung: Freiheit für die ganze Welt führt. Chassin, der die erste französische Monographie (1860) über ihn schrieb, stellte richtig fest: Er war genauso ein Sänger seiner Heimat wie ein Sänger der Revolution, da er Gleichheit von Freiheit, Unabhängigkeit von der Republik so wenig trennen konnte wie die Sache des Volkes von der der universalen Gerechtigkeit." Die Texte wählte Bela Köpeczi, Historiker und Literarhistoriker, Generalsekretär der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, aus. Er schrieb auch die Einleitung sowie die Kommentare zu den einzelnen Zyklen, die Petofis kurzen Lebensweg gliedern. Sie geben ein Bild von der historischen Situation, den politischen und gesellschaftlichen Kämpfen der Zeit und erieichtern dadurch die Wandlungen in Petofis innerer Welt, in der im ganzen auf sechs Jahre bemessenen Zeit seines Wirkens zu erkennen. Zur Ergänzung der Prosatexte sind dem Band etwa 1500 Verszeilen und eine Anzahl Bilddokumente beigegeben.
