Content-rich letter to the writer and critic Jules Janin, concerning Berlioz's highly successful stay in Vienna. Berlioz informs Janin that he couldn't profit from a letter of introduction to the Prince of Schwarzen…berg so far as the Prince had yet to return to Vienna. Nevertheless, everything was "going smoothly" and he "had never dreamed of such a success" for his music. The only difficulty was to fulfill the many requests for conducting his own works in view of his "numerous rehearsals". This enthusiasm leads Berlioz to the remark: "The Viennese audience [peuple musicale de Vienne] is admirably passionate about what it likes and bows down before what moves it." He asks Janin to write an article on a reception that was held in his honor based on details published in Maurice Schlesinger's Gazette musicale, and to mention the names of the Viennese artists and amateurs who had presented him with a silver-gilt baton, as they were "the most important and most considered in the city". In closing, Berlioz announces that he will show his Roméo et Juliette with the bass Josef Staudigl, whom he praises as a singer and an excellent person "who doesn't play god" and praises Vienna as "the real musical capital of the world" with excellent orchestras and choirs. Only the tenors "like everywhere else" are "wounded and deadly wounded", particularly mentioning Joseph Erl who "has a very beautiful voice and doesn't know what to do with it", while the others "have neither voice nor method" and there is "none but Roger right now", referring to Gustave-Hippolyte Roger. Soyez assez bon pour les lire et en extraire quelque chose pour votre feuilleton de lundi. - L'histoire du Bâton de Vermeil fera surtout grand effet si vous pouvez mettre les noms des artistes et amateurs qui me l'ont offert, car ce sont les plus considérables et les plus considérés de la ville. - Je vais montrer Roméo et Juliette avec cet admirable Staudigl qui est de plus un excellent homme simple et [qui] ne fait point le Dieu. C'est vraiment ici la capitale musicale du monde, les orchestres y sont excellents les churs de même. Seulement il n'y a, comme partout, que des ténors blessés et blessés à mort. Erl a une forte belle voix dont il ne sait que faire, et il est le seul dont on puisse ainsi parler, les autres n'ont ni voix ne méthode. Décidemment il n'y a que Roger en ce moment.

To the French composer Auguste François Morel (1809-81) with an invitation to dine at his place the following evening along with his sister, uncle, and brother-in-law, planning to sing some "bêtises" later that night, and hoping that the singer Adolphe Joseph Louis Alizard (18…14-50), the cellist Émile Desmarest, and the composer Stephen Heller (1813-88) will join them later, when he intends to make an important musical announcement: "Venez diner avec moi demain à 5 h. ½ il y aura seulement ma soeur, mon oncle et mon beau frère et le soir nous chanterons quelque bêtises. J'espère qu'alizard [!] et Desmarest et Heller viendront à 8 heures. J'ai une grande chose à vous dire (musicale) []" ("Mercredi soir"). - With traces of former mounting on reverse.
