Content-rich letter to the writer and critic Jules Janin, concerning Berlioz's highly successful stay in Vienna. Berlioz informs Janin that he couldn't profit from a letter of introduction to the Prince of Schwarzenberg so far as the Prince had yet to return to Vienna. Nevertheless, everything was "going smoothly" and he "had never dreamed of such a success" for his music. The only difficulty was to fulfill the many requests for conducting his own works in view of his "numerous rehearsals". This enthusiasm leads Berlioz to the remark: "The Viennese audience [peuple musicale de Vienne] is admirably passionate about what it likes and bows down before what moves it." He asks Janin to write an article on a reception that was held in his honor based on details published in Maurice Schlesinger's Gazette musicale, and to mention the names of the Viennese artists and amateurs who had presented him with a silver-gilt baton, as they were "the most important and most considered in the city". In closing, Berlioz announces that he will show his Roméo et Juliette with the bass Josef Staudigl, whom he praises as a singer and an excellent person "who doesn't play god" and praises Vienna as "the real musical capital of the world" with excellent orchestras and choirs. Only the tenors "like everywhere else" are "wounded and deadly wounded", particularly mentioning Joseph Erl who "has a very beautiful voice and doesn't know what to do with it", while the others "have neither voice nor method" and there is "none but Roger right now", referring to Gustave-Hippolyte Roger. C'est vraiment ici la capitale musicale du monde, les orchestres y sont excellents les churs de même. Seulement il n'y a, comme partout, que des ténors blessés et blessés à mort. Erl a une forte belle voix dont il ne sait que faire, et il est le seul dont on puisse ainsi parler, les autres n'ont ni voix ne méthode. Décidemment il n'y a que Roger en ce moment.
