Die Meinungen sind jedoch sehr verschieden, wenn es um die Fragen geht, die das Alter dieser Kunstwerke und den möglichen Zusammenhang mit ähnlichen Werken in Nord- und Ostafrika betreffen. Diese Ausstellung gibt einen ausgewählten Rückblick auf die Felsmalereien und -gravierungen, die in der Republik Südafrika gefunden werden, zusammen mit einigen Beispielen aus Südwest-Afrika/Namibia. Streitfragen jeglicher Art werden vermieden. -- Die Auswahl wird gemäß verschiedener Themen präsentiert. Die erste Gruppe der Photographien betont die große Anzahl verschiedener Tiere, die von Sankünstlern dar gestellt wurden. Die folgenden Werke zeigen, daß auch Menschen gemalt wurden. Hier sieht man deutlich, daß Menschen oft stilisiert dargestellt wurden, wobei eher die Handlung oder die Bewegung betont wird, als individuelle Einzelheiten. Im Gegensatz hierzu wurden Tiere meistens in ihrer Natürlichkeit dargestellt. Die nächste Photogruppe hat Jäger/Sammler zum Thema, d. h. den ökonomischen Aspekt der Existenz dieser Menschen. Hierauf folgen Photographien, die verschiedene Tanz- und Ritualszenen darstellen, wobei die Wichtigkeit des Regen- und Trancetanzes, in den Lebensweisen der San sehr betont wird. Im letzten Teil der Ausstellung geht es um das Aufeinanderstoßen der San und der Khoikhoin ( Hottentotten ) , der schwarzen Einwohner und auch der europäischen Einwanderer, die schließlich auch die östlichen Teile Südafrikas bewohnten. -- In verschiedenen Hinsichten wird in dieser Ausstellung das Lebenswerk von Herrn H.C. ( Bert ) Woodhouse gehuldigt. Er photographierte, kartierte und machte Aufzeichnungen von über tausend verschiedenen Felskunststellen in Südafrika, und dieses trotz hoher persönlicher Kosten und mit aufopfernder Ausdauer. Was als Hobby begann, wurde zu einem großen wissenschaftlichen Beitrag, worin die Technik der photographischen Reproduktion fast bis zur Vollkommenheit geführt wurde.
