I Sabini furono un antico popolo dell'Italia centrale, occupante in età storica il territorio compreso fra Tevere, Nera, Aterno, Aniene, con le città di Reate (Rieti), Nursia (Norcia), Amiternum (presso Aquila), Trebula Mutuesca (Monteleone Sabino), Eretum (a NE. di Roma), Cures. La tradizione congiunge strettamente i Sabini col periodo delle origini di Roma (ratto delle Sabine, guerra e conseguente accordo con Tito Tazio, Numa Pompilio re di Roma di origine sabina, sabina una delle tre tribù di Roma). Poi si ha un lungo intervallo in cui di Sabini non si parla più. Riprendono i contatti, stretti, nel sec. I della repubblica. La tradizione (Dionigi, II, 49) racconta che i Sabini sono degli Umbri cacciati verso mezzogiorno. Come i Sabini dagli Umbri, altri rami si sono staccati dai Sabini, oltre a quelli immigrati in Roma. La mancanza d'iscrizioni rende difficile qualsiasi notizia diretta sui culti e sugli ordinamenti cittadini.
