Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a 17th-century defense against arguments against the value of practicing medicine as both a science and an art. The author draws upon Hippocrates, Galen, the Bible, and famous cases to refute claims that doctors are merely guessing and cannot be trusted. The book delves into the historical origins of medicine, its place among other arts, and its perceived shortcomings. It examines the role of observation and experience in the practice of medicine, highlighting the importance of studying individual patients and their unique circumstances. Ultimately, the book underscores the necessity and effectiveness of medicine as a means of preserving and restoring health. It argues that while the art of medicine is not infallible, it is a valuable tool that can significantly improve human well-being. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Nell`Enchiridion di J Primrose, salto di numerazione fra p. 166 e 169, senza perdita di testo. Testo in lingua latina, con alcune parole in lingua e caratteri greci; piccoli calipettera decorati a racemi e fregi tipografici silografati. Primroseersquo;s Enchiridion, numbering jump between p. 166 and 169, without loss. Text in Latin, with some Greek words and characters. On the margins, slightly trimmed, there are some annotations written in Latin in pen by an ancient hand. The work is a valuable miscellany of 4 medical treatises. Copy in good condition, slightly loose at the hinges; detachment of two leaves: the engraved title-page of the last treaty and the blank leaf that precedes it.

BEVERWYCK, Jan van (1594-1647). Wercken der genees-konste, bestaende in den schat der gesontheyt, schat der ongesontheyt, heelkonste. . . . 4to. [16), 252; [8), 127, [11; 328, 48; [8], 278, [12]pp. Engraved title & many fine plates in text. 245 x 185 mm. Contemporary Dutch tooled vellum, front hinge cracked. Some dampstaining & a little foxing but a very good copy. Amsterdam: Schipper, 1672. First issued in 1651, Beverwyck's works were re-issued periodically to about 1680. He was one of the most distinguished Dutch physicians, a correspondent of Descartes and Harvey, who was one of the first to promote Harvey's ideas on the circulation, both in his own work and through the publication of letters to him from Descartes, signalling the first support for Harvey from a major Continental figure. Harvey's illustrations of the circulation appear in the Wercken, as do figures from Beverwyck's relative Vesalius, and Beverwyck's famous response to Montaigne's attack on the medical profession. The first part of the Wercken, Der schat der gesontheyt, is included in Praz, Studies of 17th century imagery (1964) 270 for its beautiful, large text illustrations (wine, tobacco, exotic peoples). Illustrations in the other parts include a camera obscura, and fine large scenes of medical practice. Hirsch. Wellcome 11 159. .

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of this famous work in urology, one of the earliest medical books to accept William Harvey's account of the circulation of the blood. Beverwyck was a Dutch physician and a relative of Vesalius. He sent a copy of this work to Harvey with a letter praising him for his work on circulation, saying "As everyone here wonderingly admires this doctrine, so I too embrace it both both arms in the little book which I send 'On the calculus of the kidneys and the bladder'". Harvey replied at length, praising the work with the punning passage: "Pleasing me, learned and elegant, and truly original, your De calculo renum et vesicae, in which you have laid a firm and solid foundation for your name and fame; go on to build further day by day, and erect a splendid monument of your genius. I will, not unwillingly, add my stone." He went on to provide a detailed and approving critique of Beverwyk's work on the operation of the kidneys. 12mo (122 × 70 mm.), pp. [xvi], 305, [15]. Woodcut Elzevir device to title, woodcut initials. Title soiled, with traces of an early ownership inscription, some scattered spotting, a few early ink underlinings. Contemporary vellum, title in old manuscript to spine. Rubbed (further wear in places) and slightly soiled, with the covers a little bowed. A good copy. Small area of leather on lower cover pitted, a little foxing, but a very good copy. FIRST EDITION. The first part of this book (pp. 1?208) contains Beverwyck?s treatise on calculi in the kidney and bladder. The second part (pp. 209?305) contains letters addressed by Beverwyck to some prominent physicians whom he consulted on that subject, with their replies, followed by several consilia by Santorio, Spiegel, Horst, et al. Beverwyck, physician and professor of medicine at Dordrecht and a relative of Vesalius, wrote a letter to William Harvey at the end of 1637, in which he expressed his admiration for Harvey?s discovery of the circulation of the blood. At the same time he sent him a copy of the present book, which is one of the first medical treatises to contain an endorsement of Harvey?s discovery. The passage in question is found on pp. 20?24. It is discussed by Walter Pagel (William Harvey?s Biologica Ideas, New York, 1967), who reproduces the title-page of this book and two pages of the passage on Harvey. It escaped the notice of Dr. Ernst Weil when he compiled ?The Echo of Harvey?s De Motu Cordis, 1628 to 1657? (J. Hist. Med., XII, April 1957). Keynes?s ?The Reception of Harvey?s Doctrine during his Lifetime, 1628?1657? (based on Weil), in his Life of William Harvey (1966), pp. 271?273 and 452, and Bibliography, p. 121, lists the 1644 edition, and discusses the book, but is apparently unaware that Beverwyck?s letter appeared in this first edition. Harvey replied to Beverwyck in a long letter which included praise for the De Calculo Renum. Kiefer catalogue 59. Willems, Les Elzevier, 463.
