Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating and often overlooked world of monks, exploring their unique characteristics and comparing them to both humans and monkeys. Written in a lively and engaging style, the author, a naturalist, presents a satirical and insightful look at this curious genus, positioning them within a larger framework of animal classification. The book analyzes the monk's physical features, habits, and behaviors in great detail, revealing an intriguing mix of animalistic instincts and human-like traits. The author, employing the Linnaean system, carefully categorizes different species of monks based on their appearance, diet, and even their vocalizations. He also touches upon the historical impact of monks, their relationship with society, and the challenges they pose to those who would seek to understand and control them. The book offers a unique and thought-provoking perspective on the complex and often misunderstood nature of the genus monk. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. "24 C M / Kacz[n?]inszhy Lajos" inscribed in ink manuscript to the verso of the flyleaf. Baron Ignaz Edler von Born (1742-1791) hailed from a noble family of Transylvanian Saxon origin and as a young man, had traveled to Austria to further his education at the Jesuit College of Vienna. Finding the Jesuits unstimulating, he left after only 16 months to pursue his true passion: mineralogy. Born traveled extensively through the Low Countries and during his studies, introduced a method of extracting metals by amalgamation (Uber des Anquicken der Erze, 1786). He additionally published two works of satire, one of which criticized the Jesuit Priest Maximilian Hell and the other (which he would send a copy of to Benjamin Franklin) classified monks with a Linnaean-like taxonomy. The resounding response was that Born should not quit his day job. It was while he was working for Prague's Department of Mines that he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and caught the attention of Empress Marie-Therese. The Empress had been on a campaign to centralize and modernize the region's institutions, which included the imperial museum at Vienna (K.k. Hof-Naturalienkabinette, the predecessor of today's Naturhistorisches Museum). Born was hired to arrange the collection and produce monographs of the museum's holdings, but the works on shells were the only published results of this commission, which was apparently cut short by the Empress's death in 1780. Born's first descriptive catalogue of the court's shell collection was published in 1778 as an octavo with only a single plate. The present, more sumptuous work was released two years later and included an impressive 18 fine hand-colored engravings in addition to the smaller, uncolored plates within the text. Born's academic pursuits were similarly cut short by his own death at age 48 -- "During his visit to a mine at Felso-Banya.he descended into the mine too soon after fires used to detach the ore had been extinguished and inhaled a dangerously large quantity of arsenical vapors" (DSB). The Empress's collection of conchology still resides at Vienna's Naturhistorisches Museum and Testacea musei cæsarei vindobonensis remains "One of the most beautiful of all conchological works" with "great importance to systematists, as Born described from it a number of species new to science" (Dance). The present example was lot 118 of Christie's London sale of Fine Books and Manuscripts on March 17th, 1999. The volume sold for £9,200 ($15,290, per the exchange rate on the day of the sale). Arader Galleries is offering the present volume at cost. BM(NH) I, p. 202; S. Peter Dance, Shell Collecting An Illustrated History, pp. 93-94, no. 36; Nissen ZBI 470. Cataloged by G.R. Murdock.

Folio. (16 x 11 inches). Half-title, dedication to the Empress Marie-Therese. Title with emblematic engraved vignette by C. Schütz, 4 headpieces and 8 tailpieces, 36 in-text illustrations of shells, all engraved by Schütz, C. Conti and others, 18 plates (17 fine hand-coloured engraved plates of shells by Schütz or J. Adam after Fr. Fuxeder and 1 plate [Plate 4] supplied in expert watercolour facsimile). Quarter vellum and marbled paper boards, original titling piece preserved on the spine One of the most beautiful of all conchological works including examples from the collection of the Empress of Austria, a collection "of great importance to systematists, as Born described from it a number of species new to science" (Dance). The present work was commissioned by Empress Marie-Therese to record and codify her natural history collection in Vienna. In 1778, Born published a descriptive catalogue of the collection; the present work, published two years later is on a much more sumptuous scale and included many fine colour plates. Baron Ignaz Edler von Born was born in 1742 in Karlsburg, Transylvania (now Alba Iulia, Romania). Having rejected an education with the Jesuits in Vienna, he studied law in Prague and only later turned to natural history, and more importantly, to mining. He joined the Department of Mines and the Mint in Prague in 1770, and mineralogy is the area in which he is now best remembered (see DSB II, p. 315). His reputation and extensive experience ensured that in 1776 he was called to Vienna by the Empress to arrange and describe the Imperial collection. The work on the shells in the Royal Collection was the only published result of this commission, which was apparently cut short by the Empress' death in 1780. An earlier edition, in octavo with only a single plate, was published in 1778. "Born's interests and activities extended into fields other than mineralogy and mining. In 1783 Born published Specimen monachologiae, a vicious satire against monks in which the various orders were classified according to a system modeled after Linnaeus (DSB)." BM(NH) I, p. 202; S.
