Webber " imprint on the title page, page 122 misnumbered 221; and "Wulpine Opossum" later changed to "Vulpine." Lacking the final leaf of advertisements, which is common. Includes the errata leaf, subscribers list, appendix and the "List of Convicts sent to New South Wales in 1787." (Ferguson, 47) (Wanthrup, 5) (Hill, 1347). "This was the first authentic and official account of the expedition to New South Wales and the foundation of the settlement. It aroused world-wide interest." (Ferguson) Arthur Phillip (1738-1814) was the first Governor of New South Wales and the founding governor of Australia's first European colony. A career Royal Navy officer, Phillip was appointed in 1786 to command the First Fleet and establish a penal settlement at Botany Bay; after finding it unsuitable, he selected Port Jackson and formally founded Sydney Cove in January 1788. As governor, Phillip faced acute shortages of food, labor, and supplies, imposed strict discipline to maintain order, encouraged agriculture and self-sufficiency, and promoted the emancipation and integration of well-behaved convicts. He also pursued a policy-unevenly realized-of conciliation with Aboriginal peoples, seeking peaceful relations amid growing conflict. Phillip returned to England in 1792 due to health issues. First published in 1789 in Paris, Barère de Vieuzac's La Liberté des Mers was an invective against the British government, whose maritime supremacy he described in such terms as "despotism" and "tyranny". This volume is a translation from a Spanish edition of Barère published circa 1820. In the Introduction, Barère charges the British with a multitude of crimes, including responsibility for the evils of the French Revolution; conspiring with American Indians to attack non-British settlers; aiding and abetting pirates; and exiling Irish and Scottish political prisoners to Botany Bay. This reference consists of seven lines of text which appear on p. xv: '"Quem concebeo e executou o terrivel plano de desterrar para o arido Solo de Botany-Bay aos Irlandezes e Escocezes, e de assassinar em Hollanda, Italia, França e America todos os Virtuaosos patriotas, que sustentavão com energia a liberdade, e gloria de seu paiz". Octavo, 19, [1] pp; disbound from a volume. A very rare early "satire on French politics and English colonization" (Ferguson). Likening those who fled the tumult of the French Revolution to the English convicts transported to Australia, the author petitions them to join the future king of France in the newly established penal colony at Botany Bay: "le vaste continent des Terres Australes leur offre un pays nouveau, asyle fait pour eux" ("The vast continent of the Southern Lands offers them a new country, a refuge made for them"). The "count" continues that "c'est la Nation que vous etes dignes d'etentre, c'est la Nation que je suis fait pour commander" ("this is the nation that you deserve and that I am meant to command"), and explains that in the Antipodes the laws are very different and virtue and vice are often upended. The satire evidently found an audience in Revolutionary France: a second edition was published in 1799. It appeared in the very first years of the English colonisation of Australia, at a time when France had its own interests in the region, and its own problems at home. La Pérouse, commanding the Astrolabe and the Boussole, arrived at Botany Bay on 24 January, 1788, just as Arthur Phillip was moving the English settlement to Port Jackson. They spent six weeks in Australia before moving on. Toby R. Benis uses the pamplet to begin the introduction to his Romantic Diasporas: French Émigrés, British Convicts, and Jews (2009): "In 1799, a satirical pamphlet aimed at French émigrés and those inside the republic who sympathized with them appeared in England. Claiming to be produced in London, the text was framed as an appeal from the Comte d'Artois, Louis XVI's youngest brother, calling on the 'cowards who fled France and to all those who have been banned from France-princes and valets, traitors and bandits, princesses and prostitutes' to join him in the British penal colony of Botany Bay: 'a new country made especially for them'. Styling d'Artois the "king of Botany Bay," the writer characterizes Australia as a de Sadian refuge for the worst elements of both Britain and the ancien regime, bequeathed by the British government to the emigrant Prince and his circle to rule. A historical curiosity, this document nonetheless points to a political and social dimension to exile in the Romantic period.". Orig. full calf. Complete copy of Vol. LIX of the journal. There has been continuing conjecture as to the earliest printed record announcing the infant colony. The populace in England were hungrily awaiting news of the settlement there was a feverish competition to be the first to spread the ground breaking news of the infant colony. Debrett a London publisher had contracted Tench prior to his sailing with the First Fleet in May 1787 to publish his journal of the Expedition in spite of the fact that Debrett's competitor John Stockdale had been the more active proponent for the establishment of the settlement at Botany Bay. Stockdale had cultivated a closeness with the government in England and consequently felt duped when he realised he was not going to be the first to publish the account of the new settlement. Stockdale set about preparing a surreptitious account by gleaning information from crew members of the first ships to return to England with news (even though unsubstantiated) as well as from the then newspaper reports of the settlement. The 'Prince of Wales' cutter was the first berthing at Plymouth on the 23rd March 1789 (8 days before the above article appeared in print) with the 'Borrodale' transport docking the following day. Both ships carried news of the Botany Bay expedition. Newspaper reports appeared in the London Chronicle of the 24th and 26th March 1789 respectively as well as in a spate of articles in the English journal press including the anonymous report here offered in the March issue of 1789. It remains impossible to categorically chronicle in what order of precedence these articles appeared. All were issued within days and certainly before the two separately printed accounts the first of which being the Stockdale/Forster pamphlet issued on the 2nd April 1789 (Ferguson 45) and the second the Debrett publication of Tench's Narrative issued on the 24th April 1789 (Ferguson 48). The Botany Bay announcement here offered predates both these publications and remains as close to the birth of the first settlement as the printed word can take us. …

This is the 1774 first French edition of the first printed map of the mouth of the Endeavor River and the harbor of Botany Bay, discovered and named by the legendary navigator James Cook during his first voyage aboard the H.M.S. Endeavor . Both of these harbor charts are oriented to the north; they show depth soundings, the location of fresh water, and sandbars; topography and vegetation is shown pictorially Botany Bay The right-hand chart on this sheet focuses on Botany Bay. This New South Wales harbor has a long human presence - Archaeological evidence shows Aboriginal settlement dating back 5,000 years: Lieutenant James Cook would encounter the place on April 29, 1770, as HMS Endeavour sailed up the east coast of Australia. Cook's landing here was the first British landfall in Australia, representing the beginning of Britain's colonization of the continent. Cook's initial name for the place was 'Stingrays Harbour,' referencing the many such fish they caught there. After further consideration, Cook instead - in honor of his ship's botanists and the wealth of plants they found here - chose to name the harbor 'Botany Bay' in his published logbooks. Amongst the depth soundings is Endeavour's anchorage off the shore of Point Sutherland, also noted here. This headland was named after crewman Forby Sutherland, who died April 30 1770: the first British subject to die in Australia and the first European to be buried in New South Wales. Endeavour River This chart of the mouth of the Endeavour river reveal's Cook's haven on the Australian coast after his ship ran aground and nearly sank on June 10, 1770. After remaining aground 23 hours, Cook and crew were forced to throw overboard some fifty tons of cargo and supplies in order to float Endeavour off the rocks. Endeavour was finally able to limp to shore and beach the ship for repairs at the mouth of the Endeavour River, the subject of this chart. A three-point legend shows the locations of A) the beach where the crew disembarked and unloaded their remaining kit; B) the shallows upon which Endeavour was careened for repair; and C) the depth of the river mouth at low tide. Publication History and Census This map was engraved by Robert Bénard for the 1774 French edition of James Hawkesworth's 1773 account of Cook's voyages. It follows the 1772-1773 English edition engraved by William Whitchurch and published in 1773. While Hawkesworth's book is well represented in institutional collections, this separate map is catalogued only by the National Library of Australia, the Sachsische Landesbibliothek, and the Hocken Collection at the University of Otago.
