B0651The first and only Dutch translation of Marc-The?odore Bourrit's 1773 Description des glacie?res, glaciers et amas de glace du Duche? de Savoye. An alpine explorer, Bourrit wrote accounts of mountaineering in the Italy-France-Switzerland region; this, his first work, focused on the glaciers of Chamonix-Mont Blanc and surrounding excursions. The text's translation into Dutch speaks to the presence in the Netherlands of the broader, 18th-century European enthusiasm for alpine tourism, which also intersected with "scientific" tourism insofar as some voyagers would carry instruments (e.g. a barometer) to conduct measurements as part of the travel experience.
