Hardcover. Condizione: Very good +. First Edition. Tall octavo, 512pp., illustrated. A sharp, square, very good or better copy in the publisher's green rough-grain cloth. Bottom corners gently bumped, and some foxing to the numerous steel engravings, but an otherwise nice, clean copy. A unique example, which bears the wonderful label of one Joseph Woodroffe of St. Clairsville, Ohio on the front paste-down. The label indicates that Woodroffe was the "Belmont, Guernsey, and Harrison County Agent for Randall's Practical Shepherd. Belmont County Agent for Solon Robinson's Facts for Farmers and the Family Circle, Greeley's American Conflict, Civtors's History of American Conspiracies, from 1760 to 1860, Victor's History of the Southern Rebellion, Pittenger's Daring and Suffering, Geer's Beyond the Lines, Steel Plate Portraits of Gens. Grant, Sherman and all other prominent men. All the publications and Books of the M. E. Church, Family Bibles, Commentaries, or any good book furnished at Publisher's prices and terms. GOOD AGENTS are wanted to canvass and supply each Township with the above name and other good works." The label measures about 3 5/8" x 6", though it was cut unevenly. The text is printed in (we count) eleven typefaces, and bears a handsome, but modest border. Rudimentary internet sleuthing suggests that Woodroffe was a Methodist Episcopal preacher, in addition to his side gig of bookselling. Based on the final appeal on his label, it seems he ran a network of local agents within an area of several counties in rural east-central Ohio, at the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. A wonderful document of rural Ohio bookselling history, paired with one of the most popular biographies published at the close of the Civil War.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. 512 p. front., port., maps. 19 cm. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER ILL THE SECESSION JUGGLE IN KENTUCKY. The legerdemain by which the extreme Southern States were juggled out of the Union to feed the ambition of their leaders, had proved eminently successful. A Confederate dictionary had been made, in which slavery was called "the South; " rebellion, " secession; " the execution of the laws, " coercion; " and the desires of the conspirators, "the Constitution." A Confederate logic had been constructed, in which a system of postulates was substituted for the old-fashioned syllogism, and every thing taken for granted which it was impossible to prove. Only let it be granted that where thirteen or more parties have entered into an agreement with each other, any one of them can rightfully withdraw from the arrangement whenever he chooses, without the consent of the others, and you can prove any thing. A man whose mind is so organized that he can believe that, can believe any thing. And the Southern people were carefully taught to believe it. It followed, of course, that while those States which chose to " secede" could not rightfully be " coerced" to remain in the Union, those States which chose to stay must be forced to secede. Unexpectedly, Kentucky chose to stay. Then the inventors of the Confederate dictionary and the Confederate logic put their heads together and hatched a new lie. They called it Neutrality. It meant that Kentucky was to be neutral until the rebellion should become strong enough to swallow her at a mouthful. She was to arm herself to resist invasion from the South orfrom the North. The governor, Beriah Magoffin, a secessionist, organized the State militia in the interest of his faction, and issued a proclamation declaring that Kentucky would remain neutral. Fair. No dust jacket. Ex-library. Usual library markings. Cover has wear and soiling. Boards weak. Pages have foxing and some discoloration.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Presumed First Edition, First printing. [2], 512, [4] pages. Frontis illustration. Occasional footnotes. Appendix. 8 Portraits. 5 Maps. Small lower right corner of pages 17/18 gone--no loss of text. Some page discoloration. Cover has wear, soiling and edge rubbing. Some hinge weakness noted. Spine worn and chipped. Pencil notation on fep. A military history of Sherman and his leadership, completed with the assistance of Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis and Sherman himself among others. Sherman's military legacy rests primarily on his command of logistics and on his brilliance as a strategist. The influential 20th-century British military historian and theorist B. H. Liddell Hart ranked Sherman as "the first modern general" and one of the most important strategists in the annals of war, along with Scipio Africanus, Belisarius, Napoleon Bonaparte, T. E. Lawrence, and Erwin Rommel. Liddell Hart credited Sherman with mastery of maneuver warfare, also known as the "indirect approach". In maneuver warfare, a commander seeks to defeat the enemy on the battleground through shock, disruption, and surprise, while minimizing frontal attacks on well-defended positions. According to Liddell Hart, this strategy was most clearly illustrated by Sherman's series of turning movements against Johnston during the Atlanta campaign. Liddell Hart also declared that the study of Sherman's campaigns had contributed significantly to his own "theory of strategy and tactics in mechanized warfare", which had in turn influenced Heinz Guderian's doctrine of Blitzkrieg and Rommel's use of tanks during the Second World War. William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820 - February 14, 1891) was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. He served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865), achieving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched earth policies that he implemented against the Confederate States. British military theorist and historian B. H. Liddell Hart declared that Sherman was "the first modern general". Born in Ohio into a politically prominent family, Sherman graduated in 1840 from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He interrupted his military career in 1853 to pursue private business ventures. In 1859 he became superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy (now Louisiana State University), a position from which he resigned when Louisiana seceded from the Union. Sherman commanded a brigade of volunteers at the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861 before being transferred to the Western Theater. He was stationed in Kentucky and forged a close partnership with General Ulysses S. Grant. Sherman served under Grant in 1862 and 1863 in the battles of forts Henry and Donelson, the Battle of Shiloh, the campaigns that led to the fall of the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River, and the Chattanooga campaign, which culminated with the routing of the Confederate armies in the state of Tennessee. In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the Western Theater. He led the capture of the strategic city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman's subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas involved little fighting but large-scale destruction of cotton plantations and other infrastructure, a systematic policy intended to undermine the ability and willingness of the Confederacy to continue fighting. Sherman accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865, but the terms that he negotiated were considered too generous by US Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, who ordered General Grant to modify them. When Grant became president of the United States in March 1869, Sherman succeeded him as Commanding General of the Army. Sherman served in that capacity from 1869 until 1883 and was responsible for the U.
