NMM Cat Vol 2, Pt 1, entry 1380: Tromp the elder went to sea at a very early age aboard a merchantman. he entered the navy in 1642 and rose to flag-rank in 1637. Two years later he destroyed a Spanish squadron off Gravelines. Tromp commanded the Dutch fleet throughout the first Dutch War, but was killed in the battle of Scheveningen (July 31, 1653).
