The Academy text had been published without access to MS 2364 at the Rumyantsev Museum, and Briusov prints the variant readings here, along with three poems that had not appeared in 1899: 'Elegiia' ('Ia videl smert''), 'Unyn'e', and 'N. The main idea of Valerii Briusov's critical essay "O Iskusstve" (On Art) revolves around exploring the nature, purpose, and evolution of art, especially within the context of Russian Symbolism, which Briusov himself was a central figure in. The author delves into various art forms, including literature, poetry, painting, and music, and analyzes their aesthetic principles and the role they play in human culture and individual experience. The idea that art originates and resides in the artist's soul appears in Briusov's earliest attempts to define the essence of art as understood by Symbolism, or, more properly, perhaps, Decadence.
