Georges Louis Leclerc, conte di Buffon (Montbard, 1707-1788), naturalista, biologo, zoologo, matematico e cosmologo, fu uno degli esponenti di spicco dell'epoca illuministica, influenzando non poco le successive teorie evoluzionistiche, da Lamarck fino allo stesso Darwin. Discendente da una famiglia della piccola aristocrazia, assunse il titolo di Conte di Buffon, con il quale è universalmente noto, solo nel 1773. La presente costituisce la sua opera fondamentale, e tra l'altro alcune sue teorie astronomiche gli causarono non pochi problemi con la Chiesa francese.
