Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. xxx, 324 pages. Map. Frontispiece. Illustrations. Appendices. Bibliography and Literature References. Scuff inside the front cover. Some cover wear. Signed and inscribed by contributor Terris Moore on the title page. The inscription reads "For Charles Herzfeld with all good wishes from the undersigned T.M. Terris Moore". This is believed to be the Charles Maria Herzfeld (June 29, 1925 February 23, 2017) who was an Austrian-born American scientist and scientific manager, particularly for the US Government. He is best known for his time as Director of DARPA, during which, among other things, he personally made the decision to authorize the creation of the ARPANET, the predecessor of the Internet. Prologue by Terris Moore. Terris Moore (April 11, 1908 November 7, 1993) was an explorer, mountaineer, light plane pilot, and the second president of the University of Alaska. His most famous climb, the first ascent (with Richard Burdsall) of Minya Konka, a 24,790 foot peak in Sichuan, China. Their small party also carefully surveyed the peak and settled a controversy about its height. In making the ascent the summit pair climbed thousands of feet higher than any other Americans had previously. Bhupesh Ashar writing for the Himalayan Journal, "A remarkable compilation of their unique expedition that describes their [four-person] travel through China, their exploration and the climb of Minya Konka at 24,900 ftthe first ascent of the mountain [Minya Konka]." This book tells the story of a four-person climbing party that made it to the top of the Minya Konka in 1932. The team consisted of Richard Lloyd Burdsall, Arthur B. Emmons, Terris Moore, and Jack T. Young. In 1932, when Burdsall, and company climbed Minya Konka, it was the second-highest mountain climbed to date. Burdsall's first real mountain climb was in 1933 to the top of Minya Konka in western China, then the second highest mountain to have been climbed. On this great expedition, one of the finest ever to go to the Himalayas, Dick shared the work with Arthur B. Emmons III and Terris Moore, two of the outstanding American climbers of the day. Mount Gongga, also known as Minya Konka and colloquially as "The King of Sichuan Mountains", is the highest mountain in Sichuan province, China. It has an elevation of 24,790 ft above sea level. This makes it the third highest peak in the world outside of the Himalaya/Karakoram range, after Tirich Mir and Kongur Tagh, and the easternmost and most isolated 23,000 ft peak in the world. It is situated in the Daxue Shan mountain range, between Dadu River and Yalong River, and is part of the Hengduan mountainous region. From it comes the Hailuogou glacier. The peak has large vertical relief over the deep nearby gorges. A properly equipped American team composed of Terris Moore, Richard Burdsall, Arthur B. Emmons, and Jack T. Young returned to the mountain in 1932 and performed an accurate survey of the peak and its environs. Their summit altitude measurement agreed with Imhof's figure of 24,900 ft. Moore and Burdsall succeeded in climbing to the summit by starting on the west side of the mountain and climbing the Northwest Ridge. This was a remarkable achievement at the time, considering the height of the mountain, its remoteness, and the small size of the group. In addition, this peak was the highest summit reached by Americans until 1958 (though Americans had by that time climbed to higher non-summit points). The book written by the expedition members, Men Against The Clouds, remains a mountaineering classic. Revised Edition [Stated] Presumed first printing thus. [The original edition was published in 1935].
