Describing the rapid and patriotic mobilization of citizens from all walks of life, the author provides a ground-level view of the formation of the Union army. Examining the challenges of organizing, equipping, and training these citizen-soldiers and the political maneuvering surrounding their recruitment and deployment, the book sheds light on the complexities and challenges faced by both the government and the volunteers during this critical period of American history.
