First published in 1909, and again by Bracken Books in 1986, this is a third impression of this new edition, published later the same year, a tribute to the book's nostalgic appeal. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very s…lightly bruised, spine slightly faded, ffep torn away, some old location stamps to rear endpapers, but not I think ex library. Not price clipped (£12.50), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy. 287pp, lavishly illustrated in colour. After her marriage in 1874, Helen Allingham (1848-1926), started to paint the beautiful countryside around her and particularly the picturesque farmhouses and cottages of Surrey and Sussex for which she became famous. She went on to paint rural scenes in other parts of the country, Middlesex, Kent, the Isle of Wight and the West Country and abroad in Venice, Italy. As well as landscapes, she completed several portraits, including one of Thomas Carlyle. In 1890, she became the first woman to be admitted as a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society. The illustrations are described by historian and artist Stewart Dick (1874-1944). Jacket and illustrations by Helen Allingham (illustratore).
