The Warren Court refers to the Supreme Court of the United States from 1953 to 1969, the years in which Earl Warren served as Chief Justice. One of the most transformative periods in the Court's history, the Warren Court handed down a series of landmark decisions that reshaped American life, from Brown v. Board of Education, which struck down racial segregation in public schools, to Gideon v. Wainwright, Miranda v. Arizona, and Reynolds v. Sims. Powell Jr., John Paul Stevens, Antonin Scalia, Thurgood Marshall, William J. Brennan Jr., William H. Rehnquist, Byron R. White, and Harry A. Blackmun. A brief typed note affixed to the verso requests that the justices sign the photograph for the Public Information Office. In very good condition. The entire piece measures 12.75 inches by 17.5 inches. Rare. The Rehnquist Court refers to the Supreme Court of the United States from 1986 to 2005, the years in which William H. Rehnquist served as Chief Justice. Elevated from Associate Justice to succeed Warren Burger, Rehnquist presided over a Court generally regarded as more conservative than the Burger and Warren Courts before it, advancing a philosophy of New Federalism that sought to return certain powers to the states. This photograph captures the Court in its earliest form under Rehnquist, when Antonin Scalia had only just joined and Lewis F. Powell, Thurgood Marshall, and William J. Brennan, three towering figures of the twentieth-century Court, were all still serving. The Court holds the power of judicial review, the ability to invalidate a statute for violating a provision of the Constitution. Crisply signed in ink by each Justice next to the photographs on a 4-page biographical pamphlet on the Court dating from the 1973/1974 term. Included are Chief Justice Warren E. Burger; and Associate Justices William H. Rehnquist, Lewis F. Powell, Jr., William J. Brennan, Jr., William O. Douglas, Thurgood Marshall, Byron R. White, Harry Blackmun, and Potter Stewart. The pamphlet is titled 'The Justices of the Supreme Court', and is printed on both sides of a single 9 x 11.875 inch sheet, folding to form 4 pages (paginated pp 9-12). The text at rear provides statistics from the Term ending July, 1973, so this dates from the Watergate term. There is a light pencil date of 7/74 at foot of last page.
