It scrutinizes the very nature of climate, beginning with the various sources of heat that affect our planet. The author then explores the methods used to determine mean temperatures and how these measurements vary according to latitude. Various factors that concurrently affect temperature are investigated, including the influence of solar energy on land and water in both tropical and northern latitudes. The author also discusses the impact of local factors, such as forests and mountain ranges, on climate. This book serves as a crucial guide for understanding the complex factors that shape our planet's climate, offering essential insights for anyone seeking a deeper comprehension of this vital aspect of our environment. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Charles Giles Bridle Daubeny (1795-1867) was professor of Chemistry and of Botany at University of Oxford. He made a number of field trips to European volcanic regions between 1819 and 1825. In this paper Daubeny describes a winter trip to the Apulia (Puglia) region in the south-east of Italy, which was rarely described by travel writers, and details a visit to Lake Amsanctus, mentioned by Virgil, and the extinct volcano Mount Vultur. This is a scientific work but also includes his observations on classical remains and rural life in southern Italy.

Scarce. Charles Giles Bridle Daubeny (1795-1867) was professor of Chemistry and of Botany at the University of Oxford. In 1837 he visited the United States and acquired there the materials for papers on the thermal springs and the geology of North America. On 26th November 1838 his observations were read before the Ashmolean Society, Oxford and were subsequently published in 1839. Daubeny's observations, based on his travels in 1837, represent an early scientific attempt to understand the geology of the United States and Canada. His work provides a snapshot of the geological landscape during a period when North America was still being actively explored and mapped. It offers valuable insights into the natural resources, geological formations, and thermal springs, which were of great interest to both geologists and naturalists of the 19th century. The publication includes an engraved map, Map of the United States and Canada which covers the Western Territory and northeast Texas to the Atlantic coast and from Nova Scotia to Florida, which presents a depiction of the United States and Canada at a time of rapid territorial expansion. Daubeny's introductory essay is also noted for his brief observations about the fledgling American republic and its constitution, providing a fascinating intersection of scientific observation and socio-political commentary.
