The appended work 'The Oregon Territory' dated 1846 and with separate pagination. Original publisher's olive green blind patterned cloth lettered gilt at the spine and decorated at spine,( lettered 'Backwoods of Canada and Oregon). An early edition by an early Canadian author and the first bound with "An Account of the Country of the Oregon", an anonymous description of the Pacific northwest, probably by an employee of the Hudson (Charles G. Nicolay) according to Howe. The publisher apparently assumed that Ontario and Oregon were closer than they actually are and of equal interest to readers. Catharine Parr Traill was an established author before she moved with her husband to Ontario in 1832. An important source of information about early settlements and for relations between Canadians, Americans and natives. The anonymous Oregon piece includes a frontis map of Oregon, with both the Fraser and Columbia River Valleys (Oregon territory was not divided between the US and Britain until this year - 1846).Sabin 6441. Armorial bookplate of one John Fowler. Excellent condition, spine very slightly tanned but bright and clean. Very good indeed in original publisher's cloth.
