Decorative stamped gilt front board; rear is blind-stamped the same. All edges gilt; silver and green patterned (rampant lions) coated endpapers. Hand-coloured title-page plus 10 hand-coloured plates. This copy neither signed nor numbered and, while including the "Introductory Note to the Fourth Edition," the title-page does not indicate fourth edition, and bears neither the Briggs imprint, nor the copyright notice at the bottom. Slightest toning to upper edge of boards. Mild toning toward edges of text. Tissue-guard at title-page is lost; others show some creasing and/or tearing to edges. Skiff of original green watercolour to verso title-page; short closed tear to top margin of p.37-8. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a really beautiful, bright, sound copy of the fourth edition.

Original publisher's olive green blind patterned cloth lettered gilt at the spine and decorated at spine,( lettered 'Backwoods of Canada and Oregon).An early edition by an early Canadian author and the first bound with "An Account of the Country of the Oregon", an anonymous description of the Pacific northwest, probably by an employee of the Hudson (Charles G. Nicolay) according to Howe. The publisher apparently assumed that Ontario and Oregon were closer than they actually are and of equal interest to readers. Catharine Parr Traill was an established author before she moved with her husband to Ontario in 1832. An important source of information about early settlements and for relations between Canadians, Americans and natives. The anonymous Oregon piece includes a frontis map of Oregon, with both the Fraser and Columbia River Valleys (Oregon territory was not divided between the US and Britain until this year - 1846).Sabin 6441. Armorial bookplate of one John Fowler. Excellent condition, spine very slightly tanned but bright and clean. Very good indeed in original publisher's cloth.
