Frontispiece offset reproduction of woodcut tipped in. Woodcut vignette on title page, illustrated woodcut headpieces and decorative endpieces. Complete as issued. Illustrated with sixty small tipped-in woodcut plates dated from 1898 to 1913, number five with two additional proofs of 5. Gordon Craig's renderings on experiencing the practice of woodcuts in relation to stage design. Craig abandoned acting to focus on stage design, including productions for Purcell's, Haendel's and Ibsen's work. Marked by simplicity Craig's productions were considered revolutionary though commercial failures. Craig went to Weimar, Germany, where he wrote his acclaimed "The Art of the Theater." Eventually he settled in Florenz where he invented portable folding screens for productions of Stanislavsky's Hamlet and founded and edited the international review "The Mask (1908-29)." He wrote articles and took up etching, published a portfolio with etchings and reached his peak with etchings in The Cranach Press Hamlet (1929). In 1931 he moved to France to live. Here he wrote his memoirs in 1957: "Index to the Story of my Days." Light wear along edges of binding. Previous owner's name inked to front free endpaper. Previous owner's name in red pencil on title page, here a small pencil squiggle at the first letter of the printed title. Laid in a folded photo-postcard with manuscript message. Very good to near fine condition.
