First (trade) edition thus. Hardcovers. Small thick quartos. Some light foxing on the edges and page edges a little toned, otherwise fine in fine dustjackets. Profusely illustrated with b/w photographs and sketches and drawings of the period. "THIS BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED collection of the selected works of A. B. 'Banjo' Paterson includes the best-loved poems and stories of this great Australian writer. All the famous, popular pieces are represented, including 'The Man from Snowy River', 'Waltzing Matilda', the Clancy poems, prose which provides a rich insight into life in the country in the early part of the century, the horse racing tales, dispatches from the Boer War, and excerpts from his novels. His most memorable works are together, in this tribute to an outstanding literary figure. This selection of 'Banjo's' best has been thoughtfully chosen by his grand-daughters, Rosamund Campbell and Philippa Harvie, who bring a special love and warmth to their choice of Paterson's work. The historical photographs throughout this volume vividly evoke the atmosphere of the period and bring to life the times described in 'Banjo' Paterson's writings. This is a companion volume to accompany the works of Henry Lawson. Both Paterson and Lawson are eminently respected writers and proudly part of Australia's literary heritage. ANDREW BARTON PATERSON was born at Narrambla near Orange, New South Wales, in 1864. His first book of verse was published in 1895 and the sales broke all publishing records. Paterson was acclaimed as the finest balladist that Australia had produced. IT IS NOT AN EASY TASK to choose the best-loved of Henry Lawson's writings as so many of his sketches and poems are an essential part of the Australian literary tradition. The themes of many of his works are drawn from the experiences of his own turbulent life. His poems and stories provide a rich insight into the harsh realities of life in the outback, on the selection, droving, shearing, or as part of the working-class city push. This collection contains all the well-known favourites, 'The Drover's Wife', 'The Loaded Dog', the Mitchell and Joe Wilson stories, 'Andy's Gone With Cattle' and many more. They are all a tribute to the skilful mastery and strength of Lawson's storytelling gifts. The stories reveal the real flavour of bush life, with its loyalties, hardships, struggle and above all sense of humour, told with a subtle blend of Wisdom, laughter and pathos. Lawson weaves a good yarn and peoples his stories with realistic, complex characters who display a proud, resilient spirit in the face of hardship. The magic of Lawson's storytelling is evident in every page. This is a Companion volume to accompany the works of 'Banjo' Paterson. Both Paterson and Lawson are eminently respected writers and proudly part of Australia's literary heritage. HENRY LAWSON was born at Grenfell, New South Wales, in 1867. As the eldest son of a poor selector on the goldfields, he knew from personal experience the harsh life of the selection districts and the goldfields of the 'roaring days'. He tried his hand at shearing and as an itinerant labourer, tramping through the outback in the searing heat; he became involved in the Republican and Socialist movements; and he also drew on his own bitter experience of partial deafness, alcoholic and domestic problems."
