A young girl, just about to take her final exams, wakes up after surgery one day and is confronted with a bag and a long scar on her body. Her way of coping with this, her wish to document this terrible condition she was in, was my commission. The work Verena is a documentation of the recovery from a serious illness. Its course, or rather the healing process, can be followed through this beautiful and girlish figure. I wanted to show the discrepancy between a beautiful young woman and the traces of death her body showed by, over the course of three years, photographically documenting a normally taboo condition. Things usually kept invisible behind the (bathroom) doors of hospitals and bedrooms have been made visible and presentable. The physical flaws caused by the illness are no longer hidden but revealed. The girl is still perceived as beautiful and is shown as such.
