In doing so, Lee began a tradition that would quickly assume a life of its own, growing on a scale beyond anyone's expectation, least of all his. Lee responded by designing or incorporating from other performances ever more spectacular figures, including a 30-foot skeleton called the "Ghost of Tom" that was carried through the streets and then inside the arch at Washington Square where it performed a macabre dance; a 40-foot articulated snake capable of reaching down to kiss young children in the crowd, a giant Irish sea god riding in a chariot, and a 20-foot three-masted ship complete with scurrying rats. To help create the proper backdrop, Lee also designed the giant spider that each year climbs the side of the Jefferson Market Library and other creatures that emerged from buildings or otherwise made their appearances during the night's activities. As the parade continued to grow, Lee sought ways to keep the event intimate. She quickly became politicized and regularly attended conferences around gender identity, both as photographer and as presenter, and worked for Transgender Tapestry magazine. Transformations collects her photos of "male-to-female crossdressers" with their families in the years 1978-1989, as well as their stories When Transformations was published, it "was often placed in a bookstore behind a cashier on a high shelf, which kept people from buying it.
