Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Animals of New Zealand, An Account of the Colony's Air-Breathing Vertebrates was written by Captain F. W. Hutton and James Drummond. The book was published by Whitcombe and Tombs Limited in 1904 and appears to be a First Edition though it's not specifically stated as such. It's not an ex-library but is only in good condition and has no dust jacket. The binding is brittle, and it looks as if a previous owner may have done some gluing of the spine, and there's the name of a previous owner written in ink at the top of the front loose end page, then dated March 4th, 1905. It is 6" by 8 7/8" and has 381 glossy pages with an Index of Maori Names, an Index of Common Names, a section of Scientific Divisions, a Table of Contents, black-and-white illustrations and photographs throughout, and a couple laid in newspaper articles from the 1930's by a previous owner. This had to have been quite a nice book when it was first published . . . and is still a wealth of information with nice, older black-and-white illustrations. Thank you!

Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Binding slightly loose. Minor inscriptions to front endpapers. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners and crushing, fraying and tearing to spine ends and edges. Some heavy marks and staining to surfaces. Boards are slightly bowed.

Beautiful fine full leather binding (see photos) of this comprehensive survey of mammals in New Zealand, with the only flaw being the beginning of a slight split on the upper corner of the spine Gilt embossed stamp of Girton College (a girls' school in Dunedin, NZ, since renamed Columba College), but with no other markings, stamps or labels Gilt embossed borders, marbled end papers and marbled page edges Binding and text block are solid and the book looks unread.
