Important biography of Captain William Jesse McDonald, who turned from business to working as a peace officer to in the 1880's, serving as a deputy sheriff, special ranger and U.S. deputy marshal before being chosen to serve as a Captain in the Texas Rangers. According to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, McDonald took part in many of the most celebrated cases of the time, including Fitzsimmons-Maher prize fight, the Wichita Falls bank robbery, the Reese-Townsend feud, and the Brownsville Raid of 1906. He is considered one of the big four Captains of the period. Later he served as bodyguard to Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Basic Texas Books 158: "This is the life of the most famous Texas Ranger of the time, the man who it was said would 'charge hell with a bucket of water.'
