Condizione: New. 2026 N&MP reprint (of original pub 1956). 13pp., with 3 maps On 13 December 1939, the South Atlantic witnessed the Royal Navyâs first major clash of World War II at the Battle of the River Plate. The German heavy cruiser Admiral Graf Spee, commanded by Captain Hans Langsdorff, engaged a British squadron under Co…mmodore Henry Harwoodâ"HMS Exeter, Ajax, and HMNZS Achilles. Having begun commerce raiding in September, Graf Spee was intercepted off the RÃo de la Plata.Exeter was heavily damaged and forced to withdraw; Ajax and Achilles shadowed the crippled German ship until she entered neutral Montevideo. Believing overwhelming British forces lay in wait, Langsdorff scuttled Graf Spee on 17 December and subsequently took his own life. This engagement highlighted the deadly stakes of naval warfare, where hundreds of Royal Navy ships were lost or damaged to enemy action, from U-boats to aircraft and mines, across the globe.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Previous owner W.H. Pulsifer of Nonquitt (Massachusetts) evidently instructed the binder to separate from the original issues of the periodical and bind together here the ten chapters (80 pages, and complete thus) of Kipling's "Captains Courageous" as originally published… in McClure's Magazine 1896-1897 (profusely illustrated by Isaac Walton Taber), followed by the brief afterward "Mr. Kipling's Truth to Fact in 'Captains Courageous,'" dealing with the question of whether Whittier had done an "injustice to the memory" of Skipper Ireson in his ballad "Skipper Ireson's Ride," which injustice Kipling may have sought to "set right," here. Kipling's 14-page complete short story "Bread Upon the Waters" (evidently illustrated by William Louis Sonntag, Jr.) is also bound in, here, as are "The White Man's Burden" (from February, 1899) and a number of longer pieces by F. Marion Crawford, most notably "Casa Braccio" (with pictures by A. Castaigne) and "A Rose of Yesterday." (The versos of some pages, obviously, contain fragments of other articles -- the beginning of an essay on 'The Holland' -- the first successful diving torpedo boat; the first page only of Joel Chandler Harris "A Run of Luck," etc.), sometimes crossed out in pencil, presumably indicating to binder those complete texts were not wanted.) The whole bound in hardcover boards covered in pebbled cordovan cloth, the spine considerably rubbed but still clearly showing the gilt titles "Captains Courageous / Kipling." Original floral endpapers; no problems with hinges. The first few pages ("The White Man's Burden," "The Feet of the Young Men") show some modest damage near the spine, not impacting any part of "Captains Courageous." Reduced from $980. "Captains Courageous" illustrated by Isaac Walton Taber (and others), "Bread Upon the Waters" apparently illustrated by William Louis Sonntag, Jr. (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. I have had this copy of Captain Cook's "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean" for many years, decades probably, hoping to find the other volume. Time to rethink my strategy and let someone else add this extremely rare volume to their collection. Please find: "A Voyage to the Pacific…Ocean; Undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere; Performed under the Direction of Captains Cook, Clerke and Gore, in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780., Compiled from the Various Accounts of That Voyage Hitherto Published. Embellished with Forty Elegant Engravings. In Two Volumes (of which this is Volume I), published by Robert DeSilver of Philadelphia, dated 1888. The book is bound in full leather with a black leather & gilt title panel on the spine. There is a portrait of Captain Cook as the frontispiece. Condition: This book is in good condition. The leather boards are darkened with handling and bumped at the corners and spine tips. The gutter is dry and cracking but not yet separating. Inside, a former owner has left his name and dated on the front endpaper and his name on the next page. Those, however, are the only marks I found in the book. The interior pages are darkened, toned and show some random soiling although the combination of all that does not really affect the legibility of the text. The plate between 128 & 129 is torn and wrinkled; the others are all much better preserved, albeit occasionally, it would seem, slightly faded. There are some pages that are heavily darkened, probably due to a change in the type of paper used but still present and legible. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Several (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Published in 1919, this is the scarce first edition of this important study into Trench Fever published immediately after the First World War. This is a Unique Association Copy: and includes an original typed and signed letter by Major William Byam (W. Byam), the primary author of the bo…ok. Byam was a major in the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.) who led the British War Office Committee on Trench Fever. The letter is addressed directly to co-author Captain J. H. Churchill written from New End Military Hospital, dated 30th June 1919. New End Military Hospital, Hampstead, N.W.3. was a vital location in medical history. Originally a workhouse infirmary, it was requisitioned during WWI as a military hospital specifically dedicated to researching trench fever and heart conditions affecting soldiers Byam explicitly mentions distributing this "Trench Fever book" via Oxford Press and details transitioning Churchill's medical responsibilities (specifically his "blood counting method") to a successor. The letter reads "Herewith four copies of the Trench Fever book; should you require more I will try and get them out of the Oxford Press for you, but cannot promise to succeed." "I am glad to say I have at last got a successor to take on your job -- quite a keen man named Coles. I have told him about your blood counting method and said that when he found his feet, I would ask you whether you could spare time some day to come and give him a demonstration. I should think in about a week's time he should have learnt sufficient about trench fever to make a start." The book features the official bookplate of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine Library, University of Oxford, cleanly stamped "Withdrawn," confirming its legal deaccession and direct link back to Oxford's historic collections. CONDITON The books covers have some general edge wear rubbing, and a stamp along top page edges (pictured) internally bookplate of the Wellcome History of Medicine Library to front pastedown and a further library label and stamp to front free endpaper (pictured) the letter is tipped in to the reverse of the frontispiece and has a small Wellcome Library stamp to its reverse. Contents in good condition. An exceptional, museum-quality association copy of this landmark World War I medical text. Inscribed by Author(s).

In 1895, the British authorities sent the Chitral military expedition to relieve the fort at Chitral, which was under siege after a local coup following the death of the old ruler. An intervening British force of about 400 men was besieged in the fort until it was relieved by two expeditions, a small one from Gilgit and a larger one from Peshawar. The authors of this history were brothers, both acting as correspondents for The Times in when the expedition was dispatched. The record of the book is based on The Gazette of India, The Blue Book on Chitral affairs presented to the Houses of Parliament in England, and correspondence by the authors with The Times itself.
