Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. "Captains Courageous" illustrated by Isaac Walton Taber (and others), "Bread Upon the Waters" apparently illustrated by William Louis Sonntag, Jr. (illustratore). 1st Edition. Previous owner W.H. Pulsifer of Nonquitt (Massachusetts) evidently instructed the binder to separate from the original issues of the periodical and bind together here the ten chapters (80 pages, and complete thus) of Kipling's "Captains Courageous" as originally published in McClure's Magazine 1896-1897 (profusely illustrated by Isaac Walton Taber), followed by the brief afterward "Mr. Kipling's Truth to Fact in 'Captains Courageous,'" dealing with the question of whether Whittier had done an "injustice to the memory" of Skipper Ireson in his ballad "Skipper Ireson's Ride," which injustice Kipling may have sought to "set right," here. Kipling's 14-page complete short story "Bread Upon the Waters" (evidently illustrated by William Louis Sonntag, Jr.) is also bound in, here, as are "The White Man's Burden" (from February, 1899) and a number of longer pieces by F. Marion Crawford, most notably "Casa Braccio" (with pictures by A. Castaigne) and "A Rose of Yesterday." (The versos of some pages, obviously, contain fragments of other articles -- the beginning of an essay on 'The Holland' -- the first successful diving torpedo boat; the first page only of Joel Chandler Harris "A Run of Luck," etc.), sometimes crossed out in pencil, presumably indicating to binder those complete texts were not wanted.) The whole bound in hardcover boards covered in pebbled cordovan cloth, the spine considerably rubbed but still clearly showing the gilt titles "Captains Courageous / Kipling." Original floral endpapers; no problems with hinges. The first few pages ("The White Man's Burden," "The Feet of the Young Men") show some modest damage near the spine, not impacting any part of "Captains Courageous." Reduced from $980.

In 1895, the British authorities sent the Chitral military expedition to relieve the fort at Chitral, which was under siege after a local coup following the death of the old ruler. An intervening British force of about 400 men was besieged in the fort until it was relieved by two expeditions, a small one from Gilgit and a larger one from Peshawar. The authors of this history were brothers, both acting as correspondents for The Times in when the expedition was dispatched. The record of the book is based on The Gazette of India, The Blue Book on Chitral affairs presented to the Houses of Parliament in England, and correspondence by the authors with The Times itself.

First published on 31 Dec 1874, the latest edition stated is 11 June 1965, with small corrections up to 1974. The main map, natural scale 1:900,000, shows the Omani coast from the Daimaniyat Islands to Ras al Junaiz, with Matruh, Muscat, Ras al Hadd etc labelled, and the Iranian-Pakistani side from Jask to Karachi, with views and elevations of several Jebels, and main roads and caravan routes shown by continuous lines. A smaller map shows Gwatar (Jiwani) Bay on a larger scale. The ms annotations mark the location of a "Submarine Exercise Area" below Gwadar, and another below Pasni, with annotations dated 1988-90 in the line of "small corrections" to the lower edge, also flagging that a new edition of this map appeared in 1992.
