Der Widerstandskämpfer im griechischen Bürgerkrieg flüchtete 1946 mit einem Stipendium der französischen Regierung nach Paris. Dort begründete er zusammen mit Claude Lefort die Zeitschrift Socialisme ou Barbarie. 1980 wird er Professor an der École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris. . We have decided to translate and publish it, because we consider it almost original and penetrating exploration of this theme. The article discussed six main areas : a) the historical fate of marxism and the notion of orthodoxy; b) the marxist theory of history; c) the marxist philosophy of history; d) the two elements in marxism and what historically became of them; e) the balance sheet; f) the nature of revolutionary theory. In August 1966 we published (in 'Solidarity' vol. IV, No. 3) the first section of Cardan's text. We called it 'The fate of marxism'. This was subsequently produced as a pamphlet (by the Clyde side Solidarity group) and has given rise to great controversy - being praised or denounced as 'the best' and 'worst' thing Solidarity has ever published - a sure indication that it was challenging revolutionary orthodoxy. We are now pleased to bring to our readers the second section of the text, which deals with what has become known as the 'materialist conception of history'.
