Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Good. Agnelli-Ravegnani I, 280?281 (?libro raro?). STC XVII sec., 615. Fiske 400. Melzi II, 445. Manca a Michel-Michel. Book.

Aggiungi al carrelloSmall 4to (180 x 135mm), pp. [viii], 176; large woodcut printer's device on title page; cut a little close in places but a very good clean copy in 19th century glazed boards, paper vellum spine and corners. Modern bookplate of M. & L. Sordelli, with small 'S' stamped in red at foot of title page. First edition. This pastoral fable is a drama in five acts, in verse, and has two dedications: one to Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, marchese di Brienza, by the author, and another by Giovanni Battista Vitale da Foggia, addressed to Vincenzo Filingieri. Vitale, from Foggia (northwest of Bari), was known as 'il Poetino' and in 1598 published a collection of his own poems at Orvieto. Not much seems to be known about Carlo Noci, however, although he published a collection of his own verse in 1600 (also at Naples, with the same press) and in 1602 a rhyme-index for Dante's Divina Commedia. There were subsequent editions of this play at Venice in 1596 (8vo) and 1599 (12mo). The 1596 edition has a new dedication from Milan, dated 5 January, stating that it had proved so well-regarded in performance that it was decided to reprint it. The diminishing format of the second and third editions suggest that the book was popular and that cheaper (and, presumably, larger) editions were called for. This play is said to have been a direct source for Samuel Daniel's The Queenes Arcadia, performed in 1605 at Oxford before the Queen and Prince Henry, although Daniel's play is more often compared with Guarini's Pastor Fido (1590). It is clearly Italianate in origin, and there is no reason, of course, why Daniel should not have been indebted to both works. EDIT 16 23759; BMC p. 469; not in Adams (which has only the 1599 Venice edition) or Clubb (the Venice 1596 edition only). Outside Italy this is a rare book: in Germany there is a copy at Berlin SB; in France at the BnF; in Britain at the Bodleian (2, including one at the Taylorian), Rylands and the BL; and in the USA at Boston PL, Illinois, Chicago, Harvard and Yale.
