These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". First edition of an historical poem on the Spanish struggle for independence at the close of the fifteenth century, full of Byronic imagery. Herbert (1800-1849), at this time styled Lord Porchester, had a love for adventure and travelled as a young man extensively in Spain, Portugal and North Africa; on inheriting the family seat, Highclere Castle, in 1833, he had it almost entirely rebuilt - and it is this building that is familiar as Downton Abbey in the television series.…

Regiment' is in a secretarial hand, signed at the foot by Penrhyn as 'Her Majesty's Lieutenant of the County of Carnarvon'. A relation of the Earl of Morton, Penrhyn was the owner of the Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda, Wales, which under his ownership developed into one of the two largest slate quarries in the world.…
