This memoir of the what was called by those few who remembered, 'The First Balkan War', 1912-13. According to Walter Allen, from the vantage of 1960, 'For most of us, later, larger and more devastating wars, in one of which Cary was to' also 'fight and be wounded, have practically obliterated any knowledge we may once have had of the First Balkan War -- or, for that matter, of the Secon, which followed it within a few months.' This account by the novelist, Joyce Cary goes a short way (169 pages) toward reminding some of us about this war, which has since been followed by at least one other bloody conflict, the 1990s Balkan Wars, some would call it. Memories continue to confuse all this madness amongst so much horror the 20th century (and so the 21st) willingly dispenses.

He studied art, first in Edinburgh and then in Paris , before going up to Trinity College, Oxford, in 1909 to read law. On coming down he served as a Red Cross orderly in the Balkan War of 1912-13,the inspiration for 'Memoir of the Bobotes' (published posthumously in the UK in 1964), before joining the Nigerian Political Service. He served in the Nigeria Regiment during the First World War, was wounded while fighting in the Cameroons, and returned to civil duty in Nigeria in 1917 as a district officer. His time in Africa provided the inspiration for his first four novels. Though he settled in Oxford as a full time writer in 1920, it was not until 1932 that his first book was published. At the time of his death in 1957, he was recognised as one of the leading novelists in the world.
