She was a granddaughter of Sir John Leslie and had personal connections to the world of European high society that informed her biographical work with a sense of direct cultural familiarity. Pauline Chapman was a writer and researcher who contributed her own scholarly and investigative skills to the project, and the collaboration between the two authors combined Leslie's narrative gifts and social insight with Chapman's research capabilities to produce a joint biographical work on one of the most remarkable figures in the history of popular entertainment and public spectacle. Madame Tussaud is a biography of Marie Tussaud, born Marie Grosholtz in Strasbourg in 1761, who became one of the most extraordinary entrepreneurial figures of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Tussaud learned the art of wax modelling from her mentor Philippe Curtius in Paris, developing skills that she would eventually deploy to build one of the most enduring and successful popular entertainment enterprises in British history. Her early life in Paris placed her at the center of one of the most turbulent periods in European history, as she lived through the French Revolution and its accompanying terror, an experience that left profound marks on both her personal history and her subsequent work. The circumstances of Tussaud's life during the Revolutionary period were extraordinary and at times deeply dangerous, as she was called upon to make death masks of executed victims of the guillotine including figures of the highest political significance, working directly with the physical remains of people she had in some cases known personally. This grim work during the Terror provided her with a collection of historical material of extraordinary power and authenticity that would later form the foundation of her exhibition's most compelling attractions. Tussaud left France in 1802 with her wax collection and spent over three decades touring Britain with her exhibition before eventually establishing a permanent home for it in London, demonstrating in the process a remarkable combination of artistic skill, business acumen, physical endurance, and entrepreneurial determination that allowed her to build and sustain a successful enterprise through decades of travel under often difficult conditions. The permanent London exhibition that she eventually established became one of the most visited attractions in the city and has continued in various forms to the present day, representing an extraordinary legacy for a woman who arrived in Britain as a relatively unknown foreign artist. The biography examines the full arc of this remarkable life, drawing on available historical sources to reconstruct both the personal story of an exceptional woman and the broader historical context of Revolutionary France and Regency and Victorian Britain within which that story unfolded.
