Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the extraordinary life story of Richard Savage, an 18th-century poet with a remarkable history. The author provides new insights into Savage's unfortunate life, including his fraught relationship with his famous mother, the Countess of Macclesfield, and his struggles a…s an unacknowledged son. Despite these hardships, Savage found solace in poetry, publishing several successful works that brought him into contact with some of the most prominent literary figures of his day. Through a close reading of Savage's writings and extensive archival research, the author delves deeply into Savage's ambivalent feelings towards his mother, tracing the profound impact of their estrangement on his life and work. This account of Savage's life offers a poignant exploration of themes of identity, loss, and the enduring human need for connection, making it a compelling read for anyone interested in the complexities of human nature and the power of literature to shape our lives. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. xcviii+267 pages with frontispiece, folding chart, folding maps, illustrations, tables, appendix, bibliography and index. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria embossed in gilt… to front cover with blind-stamped edges to the cover. Second Series, Number CVI (107). First edition. This is a valuable work much enhanced by a detailed and scholarly introduction,w hich gives an admirable impression of the situation of Ethiopia during the first thirty years of the seventeenth century. In addition to setting out the history and background of the manuscripts, translators give a balanced a ccount of the work of the Jesuits and of the situation with which they were faced. While there is much in the points brought forward in regard to Patriarch Alfonso Mendes, the translators perhaps underestimate the intense devotion of the Ethiopian churchment ot their Coptic heritage. There is little evidence that the Jesuit missionaries realized the rooted self confidence or the antiquity of the Ethiopian Christian life. The manuscripts selected for translation and now published are variegated, but well-chosen. It is in many respects the most valuable work that has been published in English dealing with Ethiopia in the seventeenth century. Condition: Points gently rubbed and bumped, spine ends lightly rubbed, some foxing to page ends else better than very good.

Folio, pp. 8; title and last leaf a little stained at lower edge; disbound. Second edition: first printed earlier the same year. This is one of a number of poems published at about this time on the scandalous love life of Lady Abergavenny. The second half of the poem is devoted to demonstrating that such affairs were common amon…g the upper classes: 'But are these all the guilty Truths are known? Is it enough I instance These alone?' Calista's own career was brought to an end by her death a few months after these lines were published; as Foxon notes, the poem was reprinted the following year in an account of the trial of her last lover, Richard Lyddel (or Liddell), who was convicted of 'crim. con.' The authorship of this poem is revealed in Thomas Whincop's Scanderbeg (1747), which contains, besides the play, a substantial and quite useful useful 'list of all the dramatic authors, with some account of their lives'. Charles Beckingham (1699-1731) began his literary career at the age of 19 with a full-dress tragedy called Scipio Africanus; when it was acted at the theatre in Lincoln's Inn Fields, with James Quin in the title role, his schoolfellows at the Merchant Taylors' School were given the day off to attend the first performance and give it a boisterous reception. Beckingham did not go on to university, but drifted into Grub Street, where he was employed by Edmund Curll. There is a brief but amusingly dismissive account of his later career in the original DNB, though the writer of that entry did not know of this poem, nor one on another scandal called Sarah the Quaker, published the same year. The more recent entry in the Oxford DNB ends on a similar note: 'He did not merit a place in Pope's Dunciad, though James Thomson mentions him in a list of obvious dunces.' Foxon B136. Beckingham's poems are all very uncommon: of this one the ESTC lists nine copies of the first edition, and only three of this reprint (Rylands in the UK, and Case Western and Duke Universities in the US), with Foxon adding another in Canberra.

An offprint of an article discussing the earliest Western travel narratives concerning the Middle East. We have traced only three institutional copies (Edinburgh, Exeter, and Georgia Universities). Charles Beckingham (1914-1988) analyses the historical records of figures such as John Cabot, Pêro da Covilhã, Ludovico di Varthema,… and Arnold von Harff to ascertain the veracity of their accounts of Arabia. For example, Beckingham argues that Cabot's story contains a number of inconsistencies concerning his visit to Mecca, specifically that he mistakenly claimed that Arab spices originated in Japan. On the other hand, Beckingham judges that da Covilhã's was corroborated by a sufficient number of witness testimonies to be trusted. Overall this is an important resource corroborating and disproving some of the earliest stories of interactions between the Christian and Muslim worlds. Octavo, pp. 21. Publisher's advertisements to rear wrapper. Original light brown paper wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, wrappers lettered in black. Wrappers lightly toned and spotted at edges, brown staining around staples: a very good copy.
