Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Near fine oblong wrappers. 8vo. 175 pp. B/w photo plates with memoir-essay by Chauncey Hare. "_Interior America_ represents.a return to documentary photography with a socio-political agenda rather than the internalized "poetic" documentary mode that became the norm in the 1950s and 1960s. The book is also a clear homage to Walker Evans. [but] whereas Evans was ironic and detached, Hare is bleak and bitter" [Parr and Badger, II, 23]. At any rate, Hare's photos of less fortunate citizens in their rooms surrounded by their stuff provides for rich iconograpy for musing on the American Age of Affluence from the other side of the tracks. Aggiungi al carrellohardcover. Condizione: As New. Prima edizione (First Edition). A cura di Steven Kasher e Jack von Euw. Testi di Judy Wyatt e Jack von Euw. Fotografie in bianco e nero di Chauncey Hare . Cm 24,5x30. pp. 374. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First Edition). . Insieme alla moglie Judith Wyatt è coautore del manuale clinico Work Abuse: How to Recognize and Survive It (1997), che rompe il tabù dell'abuso sui luoghi di lavoro. Aggiungi al carrelloChauncey Hare documents the ordinary and claustrophobic reality of suburban America in the early 1970s and its inhabitants, victims of the unexpected and disconcerting implications of the American Dream. The beautifully printed photographs take up the legacy of authors such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, who were active in the field of social photography, and undoubtedly belong to the so-called Social Landscape of the 1960s; Hare's research also parallels that of Robert Adams, who published his famous 'The New West' in 1974. " [Hare's America] is an America where the cracks in the plaster, the piles of dirty dishes in the sink and the stains on the linoleum make up a hieroglyphic of despair. ? After reading Hare's introduction, I can say that these are not simply photographs of interiors of American houses, but images of the author's interiority. He himself experienced the alienation and despair of these images" - Theodore Roszak Hare gave up photography altogether in 1985 to devote himself, with a degree in psychology, to helping workers - the same ones he had portrayed in their empty, desolate homes a decade earlier - to combat abuses of power in the workplace.

Lemon endpapers. Clean and crisp within. Overall very good. Townshend made friends with some of the key literary and cultural figures of his day. He hosted musical soirées at his London home which were attended by the poet Robert Southey and sensationalist novelist Wilkie Collins amongst others. He was a close friend of Charles Dickens, who dedicated the first edition of Great Expectations to him. Townshend and fellow mesmerists, including Dickens, thought that physical ailments could be cured through the manipulation of animal spirits in the patient. Townshend believed that the natural properties of gemstones could affect the animal magnetism of his subjects.

First edition of this classic work. Oblong quarto, original cloth, illustrated throughout. Boldly signed by the author on the title page, "Very best wishes Chauncey Hare." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed. As a noted historian and social observer Theodore Roszak wrote "these images chronicle not just the spiritual desolation at the heart of an industrial society, but also reflect Hare's own despair. Prior to taking up photography he worked as an oil industry engineer for over 20 years, becoming increasingly alienated from his work and the attitudes it forced him to take. A chilling body of work that is a harsh indictment of the consequences of industrial production and the alienation it produces in the lives of individuals." "An interesting figure who deserves a renewed focus of critical attention" (Parr & Badger).
