Zeit seines Lebens hielt er sich in Haus und Hof eine Menge seltsamer Tiere: Grillen und Heuschrecken, Bienen und allerlei Käfer, Fische, Frösche und Krabben und seltene Vögel. Auch Hühnervolk und Katzen hatte er gern um sich. Mit gleicher Leidenschaft züchtete und pflegte er Gräser, Pflanzen und schöne Blumen.
