This is a scarce and important 1878 William John Turner map of western China and eastern Tibet tracing Captain William John Gill's 1877 expedition through the region. A Closer Look Coverage embraces from the Irrawaddy River to the Yangtze and from northern Sichuan Province to Bhamo, Myanmar (Burma). A red line traces Gill's expedition route, which includes the month-long 400-mile circular journey north of Chengdu before his guide, William Mesny, arrived in Chengdu. Cities, towns, and mountain peaks and passes along the route are labeled, and their elevations are given. Two cross sections of Gill's route are situated in the lower right. The borders of Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet, Burma, and Assam are delineated. William Gill Captain William John Gill (September 10, 1843 - August 11, 1882) was an English explorer and British military officer born in Bangalore, India, who attended the Royal Military Academy. He spent 9 years with the Royal Engineers, mostly in Britain, but spent 18 months in India from September 1869 to March 1871. After inheriting a fortune from a distant relative, he chose to stay in the army and use his newfound wealth to pursue his love of exploration and travel while at the same time gathering intelligence for the British government. Gill took part in expeditions to Persia, China, Eastern Tibet, the Balkans after the Russo-Turkish War, Afghanistan after the Second Anglo-Afghan War, Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, and Egypt. Gill died in Egypt when his party was attacked by Bedouins. Gill's 1877 Expedition to Western China and Eastern Tibet Gill set off from Shanghai on January 23, 1877, with Edward Colborne Baber (April 30, 1843 - June 16, 1890), the British representative at Chongqing. The two parted ways after reaching Chongqing, and Gill continued to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, where he was going to meet his guide and companion for the rest of the expedition William Mesny (1842 - December 11, 1919). Mesny, a Jersey-born Briton, was not scheduled to arrive in Chengdu for several weeks, so Gill set out on a month-long 400-mile circular journey through the mountains of northern Sichuan Province, becoming the first European to travel through this part of the world. Gill returned to Chengdu shortly before Mesny's arrival. The pair left Chengdu on July 10, 1877, on a different route than originally planned due to a strained political situation between Russia and Great Britain. Gill and Mesny instead traveled via eastern Tibet to northern Burma (Myanmar). Gill surveyed their route through Tibet until they reached Dali City (Talifu), the western capital of Yunnan. Their from Dali to teh Irrawaddy was known territory, as Edward Colborne Baber had already surveyed this route. On November 1, 1877, Gill and Mesny reached Bhamo on the Irrawaddy River, from which they continued downstream to Rangoon where they caught transport on to Calcutta. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by William John Turner, engraved by Edward Weller, and published in Volume 48 of The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society . We note two examples cataloged in OCLC, which are part of the collections at Indiana University and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. We are also aware of an example in the collection at Princeton University. No examples on the private market are recorded. This is an important 1894 William Woodville Rockhill 'Great Game' map of western China, eastern Tibet, and part of Mongolia. The map depicts from Zhangjiakou, China to Xikangbatang, China and follows Rockhill's route in his attempt to reach Lhasa, Tibet. Remarkable Detail Providing a surprising amount of detail along the route, Rockhill covered 'about 8,000 miles' and 'surveyed 3,417'. He 'crossed sixty-nine passes,' all of which exceeded 14,500 feet. Along his route he took sextant observations, calculated distances by counting his steps, and recorded atmospheric pressure, temperature, and weather conditions three times daily. He also made triangulation measurements as often as possible, although he wanted to be discreet with his measurements at all times. 'At each camp the altitude was determined by boiling-point of water'. His expedition lasted eleven months, from the day he set out from Shanghai until the day he returned. A Closer Look Rockhill's map detailed his route from Zhangjiakou to Xikangbatang, highlighted in red. Zhangjiakou is situated in the upper right with Xikangbatang on the lower right. Rockhill marks missionary stations, and provides commentary on land use, noting where land is cultivated, along with hills, ditches, and brush. An explanation of Tibetan and Mongolian words employed is situated below the title cartouche, as is a note stating that the altitudes provided on the map are relative to the feet above the route. Significance of Rockhill's Map In the late 19th century, when Rockhill was making his expeditions into Mongolia and Tibet, Tibet was a isolated from foreigners. All the Great Powers, particularly Russia and the British Empire, had designs on Central Asia, and were suspicious of each other's intent. Part of 'The Great Game', these suspicions led to a British invasion of Tibet in 1904 with the hope it would foster good relations with the Dalai Lama and preempt a Chinese incursion. Publication History and Census This map was created by William Woodville Rockhill and published in Volume III Issue No. 5 of The Geographical Journal . This edition is a reduction of a larger map published by the Smithsonian Institution that same year. This map is very rare, with only one example, at the British Library, cataloged in the OCLC.
