Im Zürich der späten 1930er Jahre war Sigfried Giedion erstmals aufgebrochen, um in Nordamerika die Wurzeln der modernen Zivilisation freizulegen. Seine Ergebnisse sind in die beiden Standardwerke Space, Time and Architecture (1941) und Mechan…ization Takes Command (1948) eingeflossen. Zum Zeitpunkt, als Giedion in der Neuen Welt recherchierte, waren im schweizerischen Alltag die Spuren des transatlantischen Erfindergeistes aber schon längst nicht mehr zu übersehen. In Giedions Publikationen ist von der frühen Präsenz des amerikanischen Komforts in der Schweiz jedoch kaum etwas zu erfahren, obwohl dieser doch im Anzeigenteil gerade jener grossen Zürcher Tageszeitung, in der Giedion seit den 1920er Jahren Aufsätze über das Neue Bauen und die Avantgardebewegung publizierte, geradezu triumphierte. Dieser und anderen Fragen ist der Autor Christoph Bignens auf der Spur, wenn er untersucht, wie die Schweiz um die Jahrhundertwende auf den Einfluss des American Way of Life auf die verschiedenen Lebensbereiche reagierte. Zu diesem Zweck sichtete er unter anderem eine Reihe erhellender Berichte von Schweizer Amerikareisenden sowie rund 25'000 illustrierte Werbeanzeigen, die Importeure amerikanischer Produkte in Schweizer Zeitungen und Zeitschriften gestreut hatten. Das Resultat - eine umfassende und reich illustrierte Dokumentation - zeigt, wie verlockend der amerikanische Lebensentwurf sprachlich und bildlich über den Atlantik kam.
