Das Blatt zeigt Helwig im Halbprofil mit charakteristischer Krause und Gelehrtentracht, ohne weitere Attribute; Identifikation und Funktion ergeben sich ausschließlich aus der umlaufenden lateinischen Legende, die ihn als Doktor der Theologie und ordentlichen Professor in Gießen bezeichnet. Der streng kreisförmige Rahmen mit dicht schraffiertem Hintergrund folgt dem frühbarocken Professoren-Typus, wie er für akademische Porträtreihen und Buchfrontispize der Zeit um 1600 typisch ist. Stilistisch entspricht der Kupferstich dem Werk des Augsburger Stechers Melchior Haffner, der mehrfach Gießener und andere protestantische Gelehrte porträtierte. Melchior Haffner (auch Hafner, Haffner II) war ein deutscher Kupferstecher und Radierer, der in Augsburg tätig war. Seine Lebensdaten werden in der Forschung meist mit 1660-1704 angegeben; er wirkte damit im späteren 17. Jahrhundert. Haffner stach zahlreiche Porträts von Theologen und Gelehrten sowie Titelblätter - unter anderem für das historiographische Werk "Historia Moschi" - und gehört zu den produktiven Augsburger Porträtstechern seiner Zeit. Christoph Helwig (lat. Christophorus Helvicus, 26. Dezember 1581 Sprendlingen bei Frankfurt - 10. September 1617 Gießen) war ein deutscher Philologe, evangelischer Theologe, Pädagoge, Historiker und Schulreformer. Nach dem Studium in Marburg (Immatrikulation 1593) lehrte er ab 1601 am Pädagogium in Gießen Griechisch, Latein und Philosophie; 1605 wurde er Professor für Griechisch und Hebräisch am Gymnasium illustre bzw. an der neugegründeten Universität Gießen, 1610 wechselte er auf einen theologischen Lehrstuhl. Helwig ist besonders durch sein chronologisches und universalhistorisches Tabellenwerk "Theatrum historicum et chronologicum" bekannt, das in zahlreichen Auflagen erschien und lange als Hilfsmittel der Geschichtsschreibung diente. Als Didaktiker befürwortete er - teils in Zusammenarbeit, teils in Konflikt - die Schulreformideen Wolfgang Ratkes und gilt als einer der einflussreichen protestantischen Pädagogen des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts. Helwig betrieb neben seinen philologischen und theologischen Studien nachweislich auch medizinische Studien und verfasste eine Abhandlung "medicinae speciali occurrentes affectus", die in Verzeichnissen gelehrter Literatur überliefert ist. Diese Schrift zielte darauf, spezielle Krankheitsfälle systematisch zu ordnen und didaktisch aufzubereiten; sie belegt Helwigs Interesse an einer tabellarischen, übersichtsartigen Darstellung auch im medizinischen Bereich und zeigt damit Berührungspunkte zur akademischen Medizin und zur frühneuzeitlichen Kasuistik. Insgesamt blieb seine Wirkung jedoch primär schul- und bildungsgeschichtlich, sodass seine medizinhistorische Bedeutung eher ergänzend und auf die Rezeption tabellarischer Ordnungsformen in der Medizin begrenzt ist.
